What's up with all these gangs in my school?

There is a certain race of people in my school who are very highly involved in gang activity. I won't be mentioning the race because I don't want to get banned from Basil. I currently live around the San Jose area in California. Anyway, It is my first year of school here, and the race of people that I mentioned always ask me what gang I am in. When I say I'm not in one, they ask if I want to join. When I say no, they think I'm kind of weird for not being in a gang. I'm currently in one of the best schools in the Bay Area, but the fact that there are so many gang members makes me think twice. Anyway, is this something I should be worried about? Is not being in a gang a good or bad thing? Keep in mind that being in a gang is not illegal . That is mostly for you basil mods. Don't go around banning me saying "UHHH, I TINK DAT GANG IS ILLEGAL IN USA." It is only illegal to do illegal things in a gang.

Two things. First, gangs are retarded. They only serve to get you convicted and it's basically a group of people covering over the other's faults. Second, you're probably lying because I've seen the ridiculous amounts of random threads you throw out.
