Hi guys, my mom got laid off today. Since she made a lot of money in comparison to my dad (they both made about 200K a year), our house income has been cut in half. But I think it's alright because my mom was an tech support at Sony and she hated her job after 10 years. She's kinda old (45+ish) and I was wondering what your thoughts were on what she should do. If she went back into software, she could make a lot of money again, but she wouldn't enjoy it (what she's being doing for the past 25 years) If she did something else (?) she could perhaps enjoy something new, but would make probably well less money. I dunno what to say. I'm 16 so I have to go to college soon... but I also really want my mom to enjoy herself. She's always pissed off and angry I think mostly because of her job. Now that she's free I don't know if I want to send her back to that. So what do you guys think? And also, what jobs do you think are good for a woman of her age and intellect (she has a college degree)...? Strange questions I know, but I'm just interested in what you have to say.

[/quote] 200k can be sufficient depending on your wants/needs. if she has a degree in any computer science or ISDS field, she could still make a pretty good amount depending on many factors. i've seen software engineers make over 90k a year at entry level, potential for a raise, but you said she's in her forties so that also depends if she wants to kick back. my mother makes around the same amount too, but if she loses her job then my father still has more than enough to support us with his company so we keep it stable. a backup plan is always useful, which is why some people start on retirement funds as early as twenty years old. and retirement can have a plus side, as it can be a good way to spend time with your kids :P

[/quote] actually if you live in expensive places such as california/NY/etc., sometimes people can struggle with 100k a year. in proportion to higher price in housing and other expenses, higher salaries are more likely as well. a moderate house around my neighborhood is about 1.5million on average, and some are one story basic houses. solely based on location and demand for residency in a community. your job/career could also be a factor, as it would probably save more money in the long run to pay for mortgage rather than the gas/flight/time constantly needed to go to work or meetings in certain areas. and you would be surprised if you live around here, my parents make a little over 500k a year, and even though that's probably top 5% in america, they still can't compare with a Lot of people in my city. i doubt they could make that if they lived in another location like miami, where it is cheaper, but they have nothing there to support them :/

100k a year is great. My father makes around 150k, it seems you're well off. Plus your mother has experience in software, a very demanding job market. I wouldn't worry at all, the worst thing you'll have to do is downsize lol. Really, in comparison you're in a very good position compared to most americans, dont sweat it. @above 500k a year in the top 5%? Some actress' dont make that much..the 250k bracket is the top 3%..that's an insane amount of money, what city do you reside in? I'm in the Annapolis area and waterfront party can reach up to a mil but most people who own those houses are in the 200-250k bracket.

I live in the Bay Area California and I am middle class even though my parents both made that much money. In my private school (middle school) I was in the lower 25% of income levels (aside from scholarship kids). Most kids there were like multimillion dollar families.
