Fraps = overrated?

| Fraps is totally overrated. Yep. A few weeks ago, I asked why everybody used Fraps to record Maplestory. The two main reasons were that video files from Fraps are very small once encoded, and that Fraps videos are very high-quality. So I downloaded Fraps. And all those things said about it are true. But Fraps isn't the only software in existence that can do what it does... Below is a short video of Maplestory that I recorded on Fraps, which costs $37 (if you actually buy it :P ). I compressed it with the xVid codec (no idea what that is) on VirtualDub. It's about 20 MB, and it looks pretty good. Hooray for Fraps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCxrVoP_mLA HOWEVER- Below this paragraph is a short video of MS that I recorded on Hypercam 2, which is FREE. Once again, I compressed it with the xVid codec on VirtualDub. It's about 20 seconds longer, but it's also a couple megabytes smaller than the Fraps video. The quality is the exact same; any differences between the two are probably the fault of Youtube. The FPS and general playback isn't as good as that of Fraps, but for Maplestory, the difference is almost undeterminable. Granted, there's no sound (apparently Hypercam can't capture sound from Maplestory), but most people don't use actual game sounds for Maplestory vids, anyways. In fact, I think that this video is actually really good, considering that it was recorded with free software. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0no3PkarRn0 Conclusion for people who didn't feel like reading :P Fraps will do a good job of recording graphics-intensive games, but there's no reason to get it if you just want to record a 800x600 Maplestory window. MS isn't a first person shooter. P.S. Please, PLEASE tell me if I did something wrong with Fraps. I'd like to know. |

| I agree. Way too many people use Fraps than its worth. But I doubt that many people pay for it, anyways. So that could be the reason. :P |

| The main reason why I use Fraps is just to monitor my frames, the recording and screenshot feature is more-or-less just a pretty extra since I rarely record too much anyways. If you want to record, there are free alternatives that are better than HyperCam, such as Taksi or Xfire . |

Fraps is much better because of less FPS lags, + it's a higher quality. And, yes, I did notice a big difference... |

[/quote] I couldn't tell if it was the exact same quality, but Fraps looked better. I just noticed the HUGE FPS difference, at least on youtube. I know it doesn't really matter, but nicer FPS = nicer video. So, it sort of does matter. =/ But, fo ra free program, it isn't half bad. |
