A Simple Guide to Jailbreaking -What is jailbreaking? -How to jailbreak -How to unlock -Getting apps from Cydia -The fun part: apps worth getting -Accessing the system files of your iPhone -And thats about it What is jailbreaking? Jailbreaking is the process of hacking your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad so that it can run apps that arent approved by Apple. These apps can do things that Apple wouldn't allow, like completely changing the look of your homescreen or blocking ads on Safari. Other than that, a jailbroken iPhone is pretty much same as a normal one; apps from the App Store will still work, and nothing will change unless you want it to change. Jailbreaking is perfectly legal, though it'll void your warranty. Jailbreaking also has several disadvantages- namely, a loss of speed or stability. Your iPhone might lag, especially if it's an old one, and it could crash from time to time. Also, many 3rd party apps can be annoying slow. If you ever decide that you don't want your phone to be jailbroken anymore, you can unjailbreak it by restoring it to factory settings. You can do this either through iTunes or through your iPhone settings. However, it will delete all of the data on your iPhone, so backup everything by syncing with iTunes first. How to Jailbreak http://www.jailbreakme.com/ Go to this website on your iPhone and slide the bar that shows up. Your device will be jailbroken within a minute. And thats all there is to it. How to Unlock- iPhone only Unlocking is the process of hacking your iPhone so that it can be used with any supported carrier without a contract. There are two supported carriers in the United States: AT&T and T-Mobile. Verizon and Sprint are CDMA carriers, while the iPhone is a GSM phone, which means they dont work with it. Unlocking apps: -Ultrasn0w (available in Cydia) -BootNeuter (available in Cydia; first generation iPhone only) Getting apps from Cydia Cydia is the largest third party iPhone app store around. It is preinstalled by almost every jailbreaking method, including the one Ive given you. The heart and soul of jailbreaking, you can get just about everything from it. Its important to mention that Cydia is as slow as hell. If you dont want to waste the rest of your life browsing for apps on Cydia, you can search the store straight from your desktop computer on here . Unlike the App Store, most Cydia apps will respring (turn off and turn back on your homescreen) while installing. Some will even reboot (turn off and turn back on your iPhone). Cydia gets apps from sources, which are websites that host apps. It has a couple of major sources already included when you install it, but you can add more. To add a specific source on Cydia, go to the Manage -> Sources -> edit -> add. The fun part- Cydia apps worth getting - Backgrounder -This lets you run multiple apps at the same time. The official multitasking feature of iPhone OS 4 still isnt supported by most apps, which is where Backgrounder comes in. It lets
reaps : protip: go to a jailbreaking forum instead of a maplestory forum
That's more difficult than you'd imagine. Two of the largest forums for jailbreaking info (ModMyi and iPodTouchFans) don't even show up on the first five pages of Google. And for some reason, people keep making threads about this on Basil.

THIS IS SO HELPFUL! I couldn't figure out how to use SSH to get into my iTouch before. XD I already knew most of theapps in your list, except for the adblocker. I'll try that next time.
This reminds me of the app VoIPOver3G . VoIPOver3G has a similar function, except it's available for free on Cydia. I haven't been able to test it though. Besides, I wouldn't really want FaceTime on 3G. Laggy as hell. :P

I didn't really like the Adblocker. The popups are too dam annoying; you get one like every three pages or something. I'm probably going to uninstall it later.
Well, there's a better way of adblocking (which I personally use). Download this file , navigate into /etc/ of your iPhone's root files, and replace the the hosts file there with it. Once you replace the old hosts file with the new one, it will clear (most) of the ads on your iPhone, but it's totally free, so no popups. I didn't include it in the guide because it's technically not an app, so that could lead to some confusion.

Keep in mind that when SSHing your iPod/iPhone, the computer you're using has to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network that your iPod/iPhone is connected to.

alexnieska lolwut. I'm not sure exactly what a hacked PSP is, but my brother's PSP can run illicit games that we download onto its hard drive, which I think means it's hacked. All we did was get the PSP from China. :P Cheezzydude I guess I was hoping that was implied, since your iPhone and computer will probably be in the same room when you're establishing a SSH connection.

smartguy11 Not necessarily. My desktop is upstairs. The Wi-Fi port is downstairs connected to my dad's computer. I need to go to my friend's house whenever I want to SSH.

Good guide, I'd recommend a way to change the ssh password; I'm sure many people who jailbreak and install OpenSSH forget this step, and it opens up their phones/Touches to getting hacked/accessed easily. Simple guide: 1) Install MobileTerminal (you may need to use Search on Cydia) 2) After it's installed, go to open Terminal on your iPhone/Touch 3) Type in "sudo passwd", then type in "alpine" (the *'s that usually show up when typing in passwords won't show up here) 4) Type in your new password; again, it will not show up. 5) Hit enter and then type in your new password again, then hit enter and type exit. *: Not sure if my guide is completely accurate syntax-wise, but that should be close at least.
