Building a gaming PC?

I know nothing of building a gaming PC, but I want something that will be able to run anything that is out right now with ease. What would be the cheapest build for me? (no hobo builds :P)

$500 including the operating system. Core components are probably an Athlon II X2 and a sub-$100 video card.

I'd suggest an AMD processor because they are more bang for your buck. The GPU would have to be fairly expensive to be able to run every game efficiently. What kind of games do you have in mind that you would want to play?

Well, you might get better responses from the Tech section, but I guess there's techies floating around here too. With 1000-1300 USD, I think you can build yourself a nice i7 rig, or an i5 rig if you want to save some money. Coupling it with a GTX 460 GPU would probably be great both budget and performance wise, since the GTX460 can be easily overclocked if you know what you're doing.

Actually at a $1000 budget, two GTX460s in an SLI configuration with an i5-750 will rip through most games out on the market.

Well if your not going to get any extra gaming accessories then thats a good budget. You can build yourself something very nice.

This site has a lot of info about building PCs with an emphasis on gaming computers. This page has a list of their other pages- just scroll down until you find the top one withing your budget then go to that page. They maintain lists (and update them constantly) showing the best components you can get currently to stay within that budget. They make recommendations about things like cases (based on things like ease of construction, quality of materials and build, and airflow for cooling- not necessarily just what "looks most sick"), and other things that can have multiple choices, all within price ranges. screens are about $200 and OS are 300~500? so you dont have much to work with.

[/quote] Well, I know this sounds like a stretch, but I have a great PC already, I wanted a laptop because I want more mobility with my computer. I'm going to save up enough money for the whole thing. I want it to be able to run games like Garrys mod, CSS, Portal 1+2, HL2, TF2, KF. If they can run those, MS and any other MMOs I play will be a cinch. Oh, and can't forget Elder scrolls IV and Fallout 3 + NV. I am a huge PC gaming fan, but I want a laptop that can do all the things my PC can. Hopefully even better. I could perhaps ask my dad about setup, he has been working with computers forr the past 20 years. Coming to you guys because he has absolutely no idea about gaming, and you guys definitely do . I'm pretty noobie at all of this computer building stuff.

Building one is more of an educational purpose than something you do to save money on. In fact you won't be saving any money building one, as it may end up costing you more.

Yes, really. And there are laptops out there that can play games. Like the MSI GX640 and Asus N61. If you don't mind refurbished laptops, you could get an Asus with an GTX 260m at around $650, IIRC.
