Why are all the great and extremely smart professors

...the hardest graders? I either get teachers or professors who are subpar who tell stories all day especially in high school, but grade easy or teachers or professors who are really smart and/or great at teaching grade so hard. Ex. Last quarter, my professor earned a Ph.D. when he was 18 from MIT. He curves the grades so that the average is a C+. I never had a great and extremely smart teacher who graded fairly easy and or at least average. Have you?

Logically speaking, smarter people have higher standards, valuing intellect more.

it might not have to do with them being great and smart, it could just be there standards. OR THEY'RE JUST REALLY BIASED. for example, i had this teacher in 8th grade that use to treat me like every other student until i proved her wrong in the middle of a class, because she was rightfully wrong and i was correct, ever since then she just began grading me poorly. for example, on a worksheet, where i put every correct answer, she gave me a 96% while my friend got a 100%. what's up with that

It's not because they have higher standards, but that you've come to expect lower standards. The education in the US is seen as playing games by foreigners.

US high schools tend to do that to a lot of people . But for me, I had high standards going in. Trust me. But this isn't really about complaining about professor having high standards. I'm just wondering if anyone else sees the same pattern that I've experienced.

[/quote] Your standards are likely not as high as you think. Think of it this way: if you're a genius, then they're even more of a genius; 100 times more. I wish I was kidding, but it's the truth. I work with people who grew up outside the US every day, and by the nature of our work, we all have to be pretty damn smart. They're just all that much better.

[/quote] I wouldn't go far in saying that, but I would say, in general, foreign student have a greater work ethic mainly because their former education system was most likely harder giving them more preparation when entering college.

My English and History teachers are awesome. My English teacher is too sweet to dislike but if you get an 80 in her class, you must have amazing essay-writing skills. And my History teacher basically tells stories all period long but she gives us analogies first then something funny or interesting or her own life experiences that relate to whatever she teacher. The class average was an A. And my French teacher was a greeeeeaaaaaaat pain, but my whole class did improve greatly because of her. From 3's and 4's to 5's-7's in IB. :]
