Making a new gaming pc

I plan on making a new computer next month.I figured the rest of the things I need on this pc but I am not sure on what gpu to buy.I basically need a gpu that will play all the latest games on max settings and also keep playing upcoming games at max.I was thinking about hd 5870.Is it a good card?I am not a hardware freak but I do know some things about computers.Budget is not a limiting factor.

Yeah don't worry about the case because I am making a full new pc not just upgrading. Sorry I meant to say 5850.Not much of a difference is it?

5850's are a tad smaller than the 5870's if I can recall... and anyways the 5850 should be fine; if you gave details about what screen size and resolution you'd be playing the games on that may help too. But personally I would go for the 5850 as well, unless you expect to use SLI or Crossfire in the future; nVidia cards (SLI) supposedly scales better when you use multiple cards.

Good point.But I was also thinking about nvidia.Does nvidia gtx 480 perform better than 5970.Or any nvidia card.

Edit: not saying that dual gpu cards are always better, but these two cards are the top of their respective brands, and ATI so far is still retaining its' lead.

Both the GTX480 and HD5970 are ridiculously expensive. They're not worth the huge price premium over slightly lower end cards such as the GTX470 and HD5870. Save money for future upgrades. Personally I'd opt for an HD5870. It will run all current games at max settings, and upcoming ones as well. Unless you're running at a freakishly high resolution.

If budget is not an issue, get the i7 980X. Not exactly ideal for games, but absolutely awesome for rendering stuff And a 5850 or 5870 will run virtually everything on high for the next few years.

if budget isnt really an issue, just go for the 5870. If you want to save money (like 100$) go for the 5850. The 5850 can be overclocked to about the same specs as the 5870 if that helps you choose a bit. but overall, the 5870 is probably the better buy if money isn't an issue. Both the 5850 and the 5870 will max out current games and future games for quite some time with high frame rates. I personally own the 5850 and i can max out Medal of Honor Beta with an average of 60 frames. Crysis averages around 30-33 Frames at 1920x1080/ Very High no AA on the benchmark <-(Doesn't seem like a lot but it is). Think of it this way, the 5870 gets about 10 frames higher on crysis then the 5850 if that justifies the extra 100 dollar price tag lol. But im just an amateur at this techy stuff so im sure other basilers will give a better opinion. Edit: Personally, i wouldn't go for a 480 gtx (500$) or a 5970 (700$) cuss they're just so dam expensive... But hey, 5970 is the strongest card out there as of 7/11/2010. Its like two 5850's in one.

It's funny how you've been saying this on a couple of threads now and have never backed up whatever you say with some benchmarks or something. As far as I know, average FPS might be a little higher than single card, but dual has worse minimum FPS. And minimum FPS is really much more important than average FPS. So single GPU is the setup to go.
