Getting a New Laptop. Help?

Hey basil, I'm getting a new laptop as a graduation gift from my parents, so I would like some opinions as to which laptops are worth looking at. Nothing over $1000, my parents think that's too much to spend on a computer even if I were to pitch in some of my own money. xD Thanks in advance.

Can it wait? I have this weird feeling the etailers and vendors raised the prices of the entire stock right now. There were somewhat better deals last March, but since then I have not been impressed with the prices of laptops in general with the exception of Core 2 Duo Macbooks, which are still overpriced.
