I'm 17 and I'm looking for a job anywhere, preferably not fast food restaurants though. Any suggestions on where to look or how to get started?

I'd reccommend a concession store (like ice cream, yum =3), a life guarding station or some sort of beach job, neighborhood jobs (lawn mowing etc), some job at a nearby theme park if you have one, or trying a shot at private investing. I make my money with the stock market and I have an advisor from Wells Fargo, but I doubt that most teens would even consider what I do.

I've been working in the electronic department in Zellers for 2 years now. I started at 16.

How do i get started? I looked in newspapers and websites, but none have the job listings that you are suggesting. Do i just go into a store and ask for an application?

Yes, you do. You go to a place, dressed decently, bring a pen, ask to speak to the manager, and ask him/her if he/she's hiring. You have your resume ready, and sometimes they ask you to fill out an application. If you're lucky they'll interview you on the spot, otherwise they say they'll call. Remember if you go a few days without a call back, follow-up on your application and call them to ask the status of it. Never lie on your resume or interview, but know how to sell yourself. That's really all you need. There are plenty of things you can do but with the little experience you have you can't be too picky. Retail/fast food is where the main jobs are, but like others have mentioned, you can get a seasonal job like at the beach or at a fair.

How do I sell myself? I don't have limited experience, as i have over 200 hours of volunteering. It's just that none of them were for pay

Just go around to a lot of different stores and see/ask if they're hiring. A lot of the times, stores will have "NOW HIRING!" signs. At this point though, it seems a little late to start looking for a summer job. Where I live, summer vacation has already started...

It doesn't have to be a summer job, it could be a part-time job as well (throughout the school year, etc.)

Most places will have hired out by now, meaning they've filled all their vacant positions for the summer. Businesses don't usually start rehiring until school starts again.
ykevin : has anybody worked in a fast food place? is it really greasy and will you get fat?
I once worked in the food industry. You're only gonna get fat if you eat the food all the time. It can get pretty greasy yeah, wash your hands a lot or bring hand sanitizer or somethin'.
moniiguy98 : 7-11/Gamestop/Duane mart/CVS/Walgreens NX!
You have to be 18 to work there. Barnes & Noble if you like to play video games. The company itself owns Gamestop so you will have a pretty hefty discount at both locations.
