Computer's memory storage, I'm confused o.o

Okay, this is probably a really dumb question, but I'll ask anyway. I asked my dad how much memory a computer usually starts with, and he said 200 gigabytes. Most games (like maple story) takes up 1000-1500 mb, which is only 1-1.5 gb. Though It seems like I only have 10 gb before the computer starts slowing down. All my programs I have installed only add up to about 10 gb, and computer is getting slow. Shouldn't I have about 190 gb left, or is it used for something else? Also when I check my memory space, I go to "my computer" and check the properties, it says i have 504 MB Ram? Is that for something else, cause shouldn't you have a lot more than that? Thanks if you can help me out here

RAM=/= Storage. Also, a hard drive with a lot on it won't really be the cause of a slow down, unless a lot of it is running.

You asked how much a computer usually starts with. You didn't ask how much your computer started with.

Even if it is 200GB, the OS and preinstalled crap usual takes up about 15GB.

So It doesn't matter how much mb/gb you used for your programs, It only gets slow if you have a lot of them running at the same time? So there are other things that use up your GB besides your programs? I only used 10 gb and now I only have about 500 mb, unless I'm looking at it wrong...

You have 200GB of storage space (assuming that is actually how much your computer has). RAM is something else, you have 500MB of that, and it won't go down because of things. Things will use it, but it will still say you have that much.

You could download a decompression bomb, and I doubt it would slow your computer down much once it stopped extracting. You need more RAM, or less processes. I believe Firefox takes up 4.5 MB of RAM, which isn't a whole lot. Other programs, however, can take up a lot more.

FF usually takes up a few hundred or so depending on what you have open, and if it has a nice memory leak ( general occurs when i leave it on too long ) it can easily surpass 1GB in ram usage.

RAM = Random Access Memory. This is what may affect your speed. To check it right click my computer and click properties. You already said in your first post how much ram you have (504mb). This is satisfactory for playing maple, but make sure you don't have any other programs running, other than small ones. Ctrl+alt+del and click processes, anything with a big number like firefox should not be running when you play maple unless you have upwards of 1gb ram. The 200gb hard drive you're talking about is where your files are stored, the space or how may files you have does not matter, though your hard drive hay be fragmented, so defragment (start>all programs>accessories>system tools>disk defragmenter) Also, your dad is quite misinformed. The average hard drive isn't really 200gb, they range anywhere from 20gb to 2tb, but a more up to date average would be 300-500gb maybe. If you want to check go my computer, right click local disk c:, properties.
