Hey basilers. I've been playing basketball for about 4 years now, where half of it was just for fun but the other half is where I actually got serious and got into it more. My shooting style is okay, it's pretty accuracy, like a 40% chance of getting a three-pointer, 80% chance of anywhere inside. I'm just really curious. When I shoot it, the ball stays in one position in the air, but many people I know in higher grades that I train with usually puts a bakward spin on the ball. Some people say it's just for the better sound of a swish, and it looks better but others say it actually supports the ball for going in. So what's the difference? :O

Oh. I've tried flicking it and putting a spin to it, but it's so hard and I do an airball or just hit the hoop but not close to going in. D:

Putting backspin has a better chance of going in cause it might bounce back in. It's all about the wrist work =D Keep going you can do it

The reason is that say you miss (obviously by a long shot but when you're shotting 3 pointers it's not hard to miss by such a distance) for a swish attempt and it hits the backboard with backspin it forces the ball to drop more suddenly as opposed to topspin. Obviously if you throw the ball in the right spot (if aiming at the backboard) then putting backspin,topspin or being flat has little effect on pushing the ball out. Honestly though if you train with shooting flat shots and they work for you. Keep it up. I don't follow the NBA but i'm sure over time there have been several big names that only shoot/used to shoot flat shots. If you want my suggestion it would be to start using the backspin method, mainly because i'm biased as I used to use this method while playing. The earlier you start learning it the earlier you can start developing the specific muscles involved with this method of shooting. So it's up to you, whatever works for you. I don't suggest switching between the two otherwise you'll most certainly end up mucking up both of your shots and your shot % will go down unless you're like Kobe or something.

Like the others said, you dont really need a spin, but it's a good habit to get into.

I thought in proper shooting technique you use ur wrist the most in projecting the ball, and if you use the wrist to shoot the ball, it'll be impossible not to put a spin on it. Well, thats what i thought.

Thanks^, maybe that's why. I realize I usually use 3 quarters of my fingers and 1 quarter of the ball, like where the ball is sitting before shooting.

Backward spin increases the chance of it getting in the net if it hits the backboard, and reduces the chance of it rebounding out.
