http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/10/01/new.jersey.student.suicide/index.html?hpt=T2 Hey everyone, I just saw this article on CNN. The basic story is that a gay student killed himself after several students broadcast videos of him doing "things" with another student. I just wanted to know Basil's opinion on this issue: should Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei be held accountable for this young man's death, or are they just guilty of invasion of privacy? My belief is that Ravi and Wei are guilty of invasion of privacy, but I don't think they are guilty of murder or manslaughter. Although their actions may have pushed Clementi over the edge, they are not the sole cause of his suicide. Mature comments only. After all, a young man died. Be respectful. Flameshield on.

guilty of any crimes associated with what they actually did (taped, distributed, etc) but you can't legitimately hold them accountable for the death i'd say. not 100% sure on what manslaughter charges entail though i'll admit. :/

Guilty of invasion of privacy. In no way could they have known that this kid would commit suicide. Next to being charged for the above, they will forever live with the guilt. I honestly have barely to no sympathy to those who take their own lives.

OT: I voted first option because I'm under the impression that bullies who drove their victim to suicide have been tried/found guilty of manslaughter, in some degree, before, not sure though...

Does anyone think that there is any homophobia/bias to be accounted for? From my guess, Ravi and Wei are Indian and Chinese. Rutgers is a good school, so both are excellent students. From my own observations, gays aren't very common in the Indian community.
hate crimes would still be crimes, i don't think there's any need to account for a possible bias. hell it's not like you can plead bigotry and get off as if you were pleading insanity or something.

Does anyone think that this is harassment, or just an innocent college prank? I'm just saying this because I'm in college, and my friends and I pranked other students before. No one ever killed themselves over what we did, however, so maybe this is a special case?
YungSword : people that kill themselves don't deserve to live.
100% agree. They're people with deformities and disabilities who continue to live on with life. Unlike those who are selfish and are perfectly fine and just kill themselves are stupid stuff.. His own fault.

If he is gay then what's wrong being gay. Were human and were suppose to explore God's manifest. There is no justice if 2 wrong don't make a right. Those guy should be sent to jail for about 3~7 years due to the fact of privacy and exposure. Many gay guys are shy.

This raises some important questions: At what point can someone be held liable for another's decisions? After all, you can't force someone into a corner and expect him to act peacefully. We may not approve of suicide nor charging these students with murder, but if the gay student had attacked the others, many people would say he is justified. So now we can also ask: what sort of response should be expected in this scenario and what sort of response is justified? Is it necessary to consider both the legal/moral ramifications and the social impact of a crime? If these students had broadcasted a heterosexual couple performing the same activities, it probably would have been embarrassing to the couple, but they would not likely have to deal with the same mockery. Let me put it this way: If you were to willingly rat out the location of a Jew to Nazis, are you not partially morally responsible for the consequences? Is this situation different?
