Well i have this problem im having trouble with and ive been using all sorts of equations and examples from the textbook in order to find what the answer is and im just stuck, so i need help on how to solve this problem. Its basically asking "Determine the resultant of the three forces of prob.2.22. the image i made myself so lol its pretty bad but try ur best to understand how it wrks all u need to know is the three values and their degrees, if anyone can get me the correct answer and teach me the right way of doing it i will award you 10m in khaini or 1-2k nx if your in another world. http://img37.imageshack.us/i/questionz.png/

basically find the vertical and horizontal forces of the diagonal force using the trig formulas, then just add the vertical with vertical and horizontal with horizontal. then use the pythagorean theorem and a trig formula to find the resultant and the angle

Break it into component vectors and find the resultant X and Y components. After that, do Pythagoras theorem.

the resultant is 14.66Kn and 61.4degrees if anyone gets that answer i will reward them so far acemagicians the closest but u didnt find the degrees though which i might have forgot to mention to find

Regents physics. That was so last year. I'm taking Physics B now :D Basically, you break the vectors into x and y components. Then you add them. EDIT: Odd. I got 16 kN at 156.3 degrees. EDIT2: The answer cannot be 61.4 degrees because you have two vectors of stronger magnitudes beyond the 90 degree line. I think you made a mistake there.

You should read your textbook, but since I'm feeling nice... You divide it into horizontal and vertical components, picking a direction to be positive for each (We'll pick east and north as our positive directions). So your horizontal component is 5*cos 40 - 7*cos70 - 9*cos 20 (you subtract for the last 2 because they point to the west, which is a negative direction) and your x ends up being -7.02 or 7.02 S. Your vertical component is 5*sin40 +7*sin70 + 9*sin20 (no subtracting this time because they all point to north, the positive direction) and your y ends up as 12.9. magnitude of resultant^2 = x^2 + y^2 = (7.02^2 +12.9^2)^(1/2) magnitude = 14.6kN Now the angle: tan a= y/x (let a be the angle) a= tan-1 12.9/7.02 (<tan inverse) a= 61.4
