Do you consider photography a skill?

Well do you? I think Painting/Drawing is a skill because it requires a lot of training and you have to be dedicated. I however, dont think photography is a skill. Sure some people are better at photography then others, but I mean... You're only as good as your camera lets you be. I think anyone who goes out and buys an expensive camera can recreate the same results as any "Skilled photographer". I think the only real skill in photography is were you take the picture. If you're doing it outside, nature takes care of the lighting (all you have to do is angle the camera), and nature takes care of the scenery. Its not like you made the snow fall on the trees that way, or the leaves fall like that. I dont know. I've been thinking about it and havnt really decided whether I think it is one or not. I do one day, then I dont the next. What do you guys think?

it takes skill when factoring timing, precision, location. at the same time, I understand what TS means by the camera, as no matter how skilled you are with cameras, if i give you the first edition Polaroid, it will still be rather difficult to make nice and beautiful shots. I'm 50-50 on this one.

The fishiest Fall ever. What I'm trying to say is, photographs give us a view into what life is like from other peoples eyes. You don't have to be rich to see outer space, you don't need to have color turning trees to experience fall, you don't need eyes of a fish to see what a fish would see.

rod7 Space photography is different, it's not taken by a professional photographer. I love space photography, particularly deep space pictures. However, I do understand your point of photography.

I've never taken a photography class or learned from a pro, but yes, photography is a skill. Anyone can take a picture of a living room. But can just anyone set up the lighting and camera effects as well as angle to make the living room look spectacular in the photo?

yes. however, i'm talking ACTUAL photography. if you know anything about shutter speed, aperture, burning/dodging, bracketing, slow exposures you've obviously never taken a photography class and you don't know anything about photography. imo, true photographers use manual film cameras. i'm currently minoring in photography and i've got quite a portfolio built up. nothing pisses me off more than how every 12 year old with their parent's dslr thinks they are photographs
