Cd Drive Problem

Yea, on my Laptop, my CD drive thing doesn't seem to work. The tray ejects when I press the button, and the light goes on, but when I insert any CD, the drive doesn't read it. It makes some wooshing noises, but then stops. I checked My Computer, and the CD drive shows up, but the actual CD doesn't appear. I'm pretty sure the driver itself is fine, since I checked it under devices, so I think it may be a hardware problem. Any thoughts?

Try running this diagnostic tool from microsoft and see if it fixes the problem. If it doesn't, then it's most likely a hardware issue, in which case you'll have to replace your cd/dvd drive (cd/dvd drives goes for around $40+ on bestbuy)

A very common problem with optical drives is that dust can build up on the sensor lens that reads the laser light reflected from the CD. If this gets too bad, it can prevent the drive from working, even though there's nothing really wrong with it. On a laptop, when you open the tray, without a disc in it you can often see the round lens mounted on a sliding mount, towards the inside (back) of the tray. Use a flashlight and look really closely at the lens. If it appears dusty, you can CAREFULLY! use a "Q-Tip" (dry, with nothing on it) to brush away the dust. Then try a CD in the drive again. If you can't see the lens, or if a Q-Tip doesn't seem to solve the problem, you can buy a "CD laser lens cleaning kit" at computer or music stores that consists of a special CD that has tiny brushes on it that will brush the lens when the CD is inserted and run. These are usually pretty effective (I run one on my CD drives when one starts to act up), and not very expensive. Unfortunately, replacing a CD drive in a laptop is probably going to be a job for a service center, if the problem isn't just dust.
