| So I am in 11th grade but I just moved here (california) from Sweden. They took a look at my 9th and 10th grade report card and they had a really hard time converting Swedish grades to American. I had the 3rd best grades in my class in Sweden, and I has a 9.2 out of 10 school average, which is pretty good. However, they converted my grades and I only have a 3.33 out of 4 GPA for some reason. I spent 2 days in my room depressed as hell thinking I won't be able to get into University, so I am looking from some help from Basil. Is 3.33 an okay GPA? Of course I will be raising it by the end of 12th grade because I am an all A student. Just to compare, what is your GPA? |

|
AssaultRifle : I need to get into either University of San Francisco, or any medical university in California. I just want to get accepted into at least one. Do you think If I raise my GPA to 3.5 and get 1800+ on the SAT's I will get accepted into at least 1 university in california?
In the US and Canada, you are going to have to get a bachelor degree before you get accepted into med school. When applying for med school, they dont care about high school grades, just your 1/2 year, 3/4 university marks, volunteer work and your MCAT. And you can have any bachelor degree, as long as you do prerequisite for med school, which is like 2 years of bio and chem, 1 year of english and calcus. I think so, not sure. |

| aznseal The drive of the students is also what gives a school it's prestige. It's basically paving your way to a brighter future in my minds. :/ There are MANY great schools, such as UChicago with a much less acceptance rate. Acceptance rate is also based on how good the school is. If you're a medical school person, would you choose the kid who came from a school that is known for their great professors in Biology and Chemistry or would you choose a kid with the same qualifications from a school that has teachers who aren't as qualified? I, personally, would jump at the chance to accept the first student. |

| You should probably ask the school to recalculate your GPA because they just flat out screwed up your GPA. As for me I graduated high school as class of 2009 with a GPA of 4.80. |

| Just remember that GPAs aren't everything. ECs are one of the biggest deciding factors for top-tier Universities. |

It terms of importance, it's about GPAs, and a mixture of ECs. If you have a 3.40 GPA and a bunch of ECs, you probably won't get into a High Tier University. Likewise, if you have a 3.90 GPA, and no ECs, you won't get in either. Ideally, Universities want a high GPA and about 3~5 ECs, along with many volunteer hours. |

|
AssaultRifle : You have got to be kidding me. I need to raise it ASAP then. I'm taking 6 subjects this year, none of which are AP. However, i will be taking AP Calculus AB and AP Biology next year. And I need to apply for University of San Francisco and Berkeley so it will be so hard to get in =/
You sound like such a snooty b@stard, you know that right? My GPA is around yours, possibly a little higher, maybe a little lower. But very close. Remember, AP classes only help if you are going to do GOOD in them. If you arn't, just take honors classes. Personally, I wouldn't reccomend AP Bio either. |

| you need to challenge that ASAP i mean its BS that they would take one of the smartest students in a swedish school (which does far more than our shtty schools in america) and converted it into something for a B student. I mean without putting any effort i've had a steady 3.6 GPA in high school and a 4.0 GPA in college (6 courses in college) They really do such a poor job here in the US of teaching at the high school level |

|
infferrno : powermax100 It's easier if you go to a good Undergrad. Also, since I want to be a doctor, I need to look at medical school acceptance rates. Harvard and UWashington just happen to have 90+% acceptance rates while the national average is in the 30%s...
I did my Bachelor in a "no name" University and got accepted to McGill Medicine.(#1 Canadian University.) T14 Schools look for students who are wealthy, GPA isn't more important than the money you pay there, trust me, otherwise the grade averages for HLS,HBS,HMS woudln't have dropped from 95% + to 80% in less than 10 years... If you want to take on 400k debt just to go to a "Prestigious" University, then have fun hating your life. I have less than 8k debt here in McGill and i'll use my Physician salary to live my life when i have the time, not to give 70% of it in insurance and banks like most HYS Students do. |
Yes money is a factor, but not as big as everyone makes it look like. I won't hate my life because my goal is to become a great surgeon. What better way than to make it into a good Undergrad which makes me getting into an even better Medical school? I hate to say this, but money really isn't an issue for me. If I get accepted into a good school, my parents will pay for everything. If I don't, they throw me out the house. Nice little incentive... :/ |

You shouldn't choose Undergrad for reputation, but by considering the factors that will make you blow everything up. If you're sure you can rake 90% in Arts in this or that University, then go for it and take extra - science classes instead of risking everything in a well-known school because it's an environment you don't know and you get to work in a way you don't like. My dad, who is a well-known Cardiothoracic Surgeon here in Quebec paid for my studies and teached me the "secrets and keys" to get into Competitive programs that many students fail to understand, i followed each and every advices he gave me and got accepted after my Bachelor. |
