[/quote] I can explain to you why for each pokemon. And why no snorlax/charizard. The writers simply did not want Ash to win, because winning the tournament would make his dream come true. Anyways: Pikachu: no explanation. needed for some "awesome," in the battle. Sceptile: Ash's powerhouse from Hoenn. Writers wanted to display the strength of Takuto's pokemon by utterly sweeping. Torkoal: Ash's most strongest in defense, and was ohko'd by Darkrai's dark pulse to showcase its immense power. Swellow: Ash's fastest and most lithe pokemon. Writers wanted to show how feeble it was compared to the speed and power of Latios. Gible: The writers wanted to show how fast Darkrai was by having him use Draco Meteor and having Darkrai dodge all of it. Heracross: One of Ash's toughest pokemon. Again, they wanted to showcase Darkrai's power. Darkrai withstood a guts + megahorn Heracross. Above He won Orange League. zatwera Swellow is his best flying-type. Sceptile is one of his strongest powerhouses under Charizard.

Hoenn was a failure, and BF was just a revisit to Kanto. DP was only about 20% filler, and it actually had a decent plot.
