Any free photo editing softwear simmilar to photoshop?

My computer broke recently and I had one of the newer versions of photoshop on the computer. When my computer broke I lost all the information on my hard drive. I tried to contact the people who made photoshop to see if they would let me re-download it without charge, but they said they can't do that. So, I need a program similar to photoshop (aka not MS paint) to edit my pictures. Any suggestions? Links possibly? Thanks in advance.

Paint.NET is the best one IMO. At one point I liked it better than Photoshop. Now I like Photoshop :P.

I find GIMP a bit confusing, but if you're not as lazy as me, you can probably figure it out. Paint.NET is also a pretty good free alternative.
