NVIDIA GTX 480 vs ATI 5970

Which graphics card is better? I built my computer earlier today but I still haven't bought a graphics card, which is no big deal because local stores sell them. Anyways, I have a pretty reliable setup going: Intel Core i7 920, 6GB Corsair RAM, and an Asus Rampage Motherboard; so I need a great graphics card to make it one. So... GTX480 is 1.5GB and costs $500 but HD5970 is 2GB and costs $650. I am not a fan of either one, my old computer had a simple gpu, so gaming pcs are new"ish" to me. Which one is better?

The 5970 is more powerful if you like that. Interestingly enough, two GTX460s (~$400) in SLI can outperform one GTX480. http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1364/1/

I am not a fan of SLI/Crossfire because the more cards you add, the less performance each one gets.

[/quote] It is 2 5870 cores but at 5850 speeds so it is really a 5850x2 but then again, it is easily overclockable to 2x 5870 speeds. I would still go with the GTX 480 though, the 5970 have a lot of issues due to it being a dual GPU card. As well, it is the biggest card out there so it might not even fit your case. Just some of the reasons why I chose to go with 2 5870s as opposed to one 5970

If you don't mind the noise/heat, the GTX 480 is the way to go if you're a "fan" of single gpu solutions for future SLI setups.

If you don't mind having to buy like a 10000W PSU just to power those godawful things and a very expensive case for airflow purposes...

[/quote] Yeah but if you don't mind the countless driver issues with the 5970, then it's a great choice. I'm normally an ATI guy but the 5970 is quite a brutal product
