Why does my laptop get so hot?

Ever since I bought my laptop, it's been getting extremely hot. It goes up to a whopping 110 C when I play games and when I'm doing nothing, and simply turn it on, it goes up to 90 C. I leave it on my desk under a cooling fan for laptops so it's on a flat surface, there's no dust in the fan or anything. When I play MS when it's still around the 60 C - 80 C range, I play at 40 FPS. Then once it gets really hot it slowly drops to 3 FPS. Why is this happening?

Yeah, that doesn't sound normal at all. How old is it now..? I'm just thinking if it's still under warranty, you might want to have the manufacturer take a look and see what's up with it. I wouldn't be surprised to find out they forgot to put a heatsink on, or the transfer medium between the CPU chip and the heatsink. Also it might be a defective fan, if your model is one that comes with a fan. It happens, and a dead fan in a laptop could be pretty bad. At the very least you should have it checked out by a service dept who can see if there's a problem that needs to be fixed.

I'm not sure if I'm still able to get it checked by the manufacturer or not.

A local computer store with a service department should be able to inspect it for you. They should have the proper tools and experience to be able to do it right and give you a good idea what might be the problem.

may I ask what laptop it is and what GPU you have? I know Nvidia had a problem with putting bad GPU's in some laptops that end up having the heatsink go bad after a short while, my fiance was one of the unlucky one's and bought her compaq with one of these bad GPU's, although, they did come out with a bios update that turns the fan on sooner which does keep it cooler than it was before

I heard that it was on recall or something. I have GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M if that's what you're asking. Also I do have a cooler underneath my laptop but it doesn't seem very effective.

It's age alone is enough to determine the most probable cause is wear and tear on the machine's cooling components. O_x

yeah, it was HP that had the bad bunch of graphics cards...go to the HP site and update your Bios djpinc19 he said he's been having this issue since he got the laptop

I'm not sure it's because the computer itself is overheating that the computer has such a low performance. Even though I set the battery to High Performance and I set the computer settings to high performance.

The FPS drop is due your cpu/gpu downclocking in an attempt to reduce the heat being generated; its done to protect your components as 120C is pretty much the overall limit. Like BobR said, a local shop is your best bet since if you went to diagnose your system, theres a definite probably that you would make the problem worse.

Also, setting the computer to "high performance" will likely make things worse, as running on "high" will cause it to heat even more.

[/quote] and you updated it with the stuff FROM THE HP WEBSITE? if you just use device manager it won't notice new bios update's from HP

codytoad1 I've been downloading from another website (forgot the name) that has updated video drivers which my graphics card can update from. However, I haven't seen any performance differences. I'm unable to find new bios updates from HP since there are so many versions of my computer and I'm unable to find the specific one.

to find the specific one, the WHOLE model of your computer will be listed out when you go to start and type in DxDiag, and that should get you the update you need, and the reason you should download the graphics driver off the HP site, is because they may also have a fix for the graphics card heating up so much that wasn't released in the normal driver
