Hello. Some of you may know me as an avid self-taught digital artist, a person addicted to kpop, or not at all. Today, my parents looked at the sat prep that i was doing for the last 2 weeks. I proved to them that I can memorize around 2,600 out of 3,500 vocab words on a vocab list. [personally i think this is kind of pointless but whatever..] I also proved to them that I did 8 full length practice tests. They said as long as I study, I'm free to do whatever. Wanna know how they reacted after I showed them? Vocab: not enough. failed SAT practice tests: could've copied answers from the back and changed a few here and there to make it seem imperfect but legitimate. the only way for me to satisfy them is if i show my work for every math problem and show elimination answers for every grammar problem as well as highlighted passage sections in the critical reading section. Sorry parents, I don't work that way. my first SAT test got me a 2210, while they were happy enough, they said 'hey, just try one more time. and if you dont do better ill cut your head off.' anyways, i never highlight stuff. i dont cross out every answer. and most importantly, im not so stupid at math that i have to show my work for every problem, besides i have a calc to use. so? Their verdict? throughout the whole week, i did close to zero sat prep, maybe at most 20-30 mins a day to 'pretend' that i did it. They had no proof of it either. now i'll tell you, basil, that i did do these say prep questions. anyways, my punishment? Take away my tablet. can't draw now aside from pencil drawings. Move my computer from my room to the middle of the kitchen so they can keep their eye on me, even though they are always either at work or upstairs. Take away my ps3 and ps2. i was in the middle of 3 games at once. Take away my cellphone. well, im pissed at that for obvious reasons Take away my iPod. THIS is outrageous. They KNOW for a fact that I spend almost no time on my iPod when at home. I listen to my iPod when I am in the car, on a bus, or walking. That is all. I love my music.. and i walk almost an hour a day outside.. how does listening to music or not listening to music matter when im outside anyways, walking in an area where there aren't many cars? Force me to sleep in my normal room. My parents are picky. They turn off the air conditioning nightly. It goes up to 85 degrees F in the home during the night.. too hot. I live in the basement. Yes, make all the jokes you want, but it's a proper room with a proper bed, it's just cooler by literally 10 degrees F. I love it down there, no airconditioning needed at all. Now, I'm sweating. So? Well, now my life is boring as hell. I can't draw [well i can but i can't color or improve my coloring which is what i need to improve]. I can't dance because the place I'm at right now is undance-able [small area, no mat, though i can dance w/o music, but... it's just.. not the same]. I can't easily sneak on in the middle of the night. I'm sneaking on rig

My dad threatens to leave me on the streets if I don't do well in school/save money. O.o That's rough, really rough. My parents only take away the comp/PS3 for like a day. I think that you should show them said prep tests and tell them they're being way too harsh. Telling the people they know you're a (censored) up child is terrible, it'd be verbal abuse in my books. However, you have 2 rooms? o.o Why don't you tell your parents that you wish to be in the basement as your permanent room, and leave the other for storage or w/e.

[quote] ApplShinR : WorkofArt I feel obligated to reply. Growing up as the only child in a Chinese family is tough. In my younger years, I have more than once wished to have been raised Caucasian. Recently, I've had a change of heart towards my parents, and their way of life. As is customary, my parents only conceived one child. I was raised in China by my WaiPo and my WaiGong until I was two. At that point, I was sent to live in America with my parents. Due to the transition from China to America, my parents had to repeat med school. They're both extremely intelligent and constantly pester me on how I should be smarter (no kidding, I'm brilliant). Chinese parents in my area, and most likely elsewhere, love to compare their children. However, with both my parents being doctors, I've always gone to private school and my parents have had minimal interaction with other Chinese parents (until four years ago). These days they share my shortcomings with their friends, but I think they are somewhat satisfied with me. I've managed to make quite a few Chinese friends, but the majority of the people I hang out with (and my girlfriend) are Caucasian. My parents expect a great deal from me, and they don't understand when I don't have homework or something like that. Like other Chinese kids, I'm fantastic in school, especially math (I despise math). My parents have always complained how I'm not in Math Team; despite the fact that they know there is no math team in my school. They also can't understand how I don't enjoy school, or don't seem as happy as I was in elementary school. For me, the huge turning point in my life was throwing away innocence and ignorance upon discovering the internet. In a lot of respects, my parents are much like yours. I find them unreasonable at times and they won't even listen to my compelling arguments as to why they're being unfair. Whenever I'm the slightest bit out of line, they take away everything! I get no allowance (I save money from the money they give me for lunch while volunteering, when I go on trips with friends, ect.) I'm technically not allowed use of my laptop outside of schoolwork (my dad set a password on my account, but I know it). I'm a lot like you in the sense that I need the internet to survive, I constantly stay up late or procrastinate when I'm supposed to be doing school work to use it. My video game consoles are covered in dust except during holidays. During this summer vacation while I wasn't in China or volunteering (I LOVE CHINA, it's amazing. I was born in Shanghai and it's so much better than any city in the US. I used to not like it since my parents would almost force me to enjoy the culture, but it's China is just awesome. Their over glorified view of everyone of Chinese descent is disgusting though, apparently all the other Chinese kids are better than me and no Chinese person can fail? Wtf?) I was assigned ridiculous amounts of PSAT prep. PSAT! This is the one I'm supposed to take in tenth grade
