Are DEF scrolls useless?

What if you need 1 extra def to survive a hit from a boss like Zakum or Bigfoot. That 1 extra def can mean life or death. My friend thinks def scrolls are useless but I think they could be used at the right times if necessary.

It's pretty useless. The amount you can get from scrolls is not enough to make a real difference. With potentials you may be able to make a really nice set, but not with scrolls alone. The best defense is a good offense.

1 defense will barely make a difference of like, what, 1 damage? However, a zhelm is a different story. That will decrease your damage by about 200 (?).
