Why is nuclear deterrence still important?

To all the smarties on basil: What are reasons why nuclear deterrence is still needed over conventional deterrence and economic deterrence (as in sanctions)? First time ever Google has let me down.

I assume your talking about the clause that if 2 countries are ever in a nuclear war, we will have mutualy destruction? It's self explanatory.. Edit: It is referred to as MAD, mutually assured destruction.

Because economic deterrence is hardly effective if only one country has nukes. Luckily, Mutual Assured Destruction still applies as much as it did during the Cold War. Realistically, a large scale nuclear war is next to impossible between countries. The casualties would be too high on all sides. As long as more than one country has nukes, we need nuclear deterrence.

Countries such as Israel are beyond international law nowadays and will continue to build nuclear weapons. There was a documentary about an ex Israeli engineer who was a part of the program who took evidence to prove the nuclear program was real. He ended up being abducted while on holiday and is still being held captive to this very day. Any way - as above, it's a part of the peace keeping process, chances are South Korea and areas such as Palestine would be raided in no time.

[/quote] But whats the point of that one country having nukes if sanctions are just slapped onto it and countries using conventional weapon deterrence?

[/quote] I'm not sure what you're trying to ask. If you want to know why countries keep trying to develop nukes it's because they want some defense against nuclear attack. Theoretically any non-nuclear nation is at a great risk because any country with nuclear weapons could crush them inside of a few days using nuclear weaonry. While world interdependence and economic needs make this risk virtually non-existent, governments still want to ensure the safety of their own people. Nukes remain the most effective way to do that.

[/quote] What I'm trying to say is, why would governments feel the need to build nukes if the possibility of nuclear attack is non-existent due to interdependence and economic needs?
