PSA: Sleep deprivation is more harmful than you may think

| Hey fellow basilers. So as summer time rolls around and crazy Maple events are abound, I know a lot of you guys are considering pulling all-nighters, and some of you are trying to pull consecutive all-nighters. Now I may not be a wise old guru, nor am I even past the age of 21 but I have been through high school and I've seen what sleep deprivation does to people. Now let's be honest, I've pulled many all-nighters. Occasionally staying up all night does not cause irrevocable damage to your body. However, it only takes one all nighter to destroy your sleep pattern, and that in itself is a pain to restore. A good friend of mine at UC Davis is a psychology-chemistry double major. He runs volunteer experiments with high school students from the local high schools and here's some of his results. Check this: Control group of 60 students, 20 students getting 4 hours of sleep, 20 students getting no sleep at all, and 20 students getting 8.5 hours of sleep (the recommended amount for high school teenagers). They were all given 3 tests, one on rote memorization, motor skills, and hormonal activity. The students that got 4 hours of sleep were able to remember 15% better than the students who had no sleep at all (6 more objects out of 40), Improved (on average) 0.29 milliseconds of hand-eye response time (test involved a device which subject tapped his finger as soon as a green light appeared in his visor), and their hormonal levels were significantly more stable. The students that slept 8.5 hours were able to remember 17.5% better than the students that slept 4 hours (7 objects / 40) and a whopping 32.5% better than the students that got no sleep at all (13 objects / 40). Their hand-eye response time improved 0.23 milliseconds over the students that slept 4 hours and over half a second over the sleep-deprived students. Their hormonal level was also the most stable. This is important because your body's hormonal activity affects your mood, metabolism, and the chemicals inside your brain. An imbalance of these chemicals can cause depression . (These results are pending in publication to the APA, but it'll probably get rejected because of the small control group) So please, sleep when it's time to sleep and have as much fun as you can when you're awake. If you constantly don't get enough sleep, you'll live in this perpetual dream-like state of confusion where you're always tired, always cranky, have frequent mood swings, and have imbalanced appetites. Sleep deprivation is also linked to early death , heart-related diseases , obesity , depression , anxiety disorders , autoimmunity disorders , and much more. Source: Studies at Bryn Mawr College Thanks for reading this y'all. EDIT: The best time for you guys to sleep is between 10:30PM and 2:30AM. This is when the body repairs the daily wear and tear it goes through during the day, and also when your body's hormones are the most active. If you guys want to grow taller, sleep during this time. If you guys work out |

| Also, some more information: The best time to sleep for teenagers is between the hours of 10:30PM-2:30AM. This is when your hormonal levels are the most active and also, our body's natural daily wear and tear is repaired during this time. Have any aspirations of growing taller? Sleep during this time. Do you work out? Sleep during this time. Remember, you don't gain anything from working out... It's when your body repairs itself, you start to see gains on yourself. |

|
MrsAbc : help me plz. when summer came i went to bed at like 6am and now i wake up at 2-4pm and go to bed at 4-10am. pls help me get back on track
Excercise is a good way of naturally spending your body's stored energy. Don't try anything too strenuous, just something that will bring your heart rate to at least 130% of its normal level for at least 20 minutes. This will cause your body to release natural endorphins, which not only make you feel good and relaxed, it'll calm a lot of your hormones. This, coupled with a nice hot shower will put you to sleep in no time. Make sure to get to bed before 10:30AM because that's when the body needs the sleep the most. (10:30AM to 2:00AM) is the most important. Also, you might not be able to jump right back on track the first day, so stay vigilant! You will be able to get right back to where you were in a few days time. |
