well i just got a new gaming computer. aspire m7721 intel core i7 930 @ 2.80ghz 2.80ghz 4 cores nvidia gt 330 6gig ram 2 gig of video memory when i am running my computer normally, my cpu usage was around 1% to 3% when i started GTA IV, everything was set to low, except for the resolution, which was maxed out. the game averaged an fps of 19 (that is low as hell) my system usage was at 88% and 3 gig of ram was being used 400mb out of 2gig of video memory was used i can run mw2 ,fallout 3 and borderlands on maximum settings fine. but when i start gta iv, all hell breaks lose. i even tried http://cyri.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/ and my computer's results exceed the recommended settings. nearly reaching the end of the bar by a few millimeters. so i ask you basil. why is it when i start GTA IV my computer starts acting like a piece of crap? summary : i have pro gaming com that can run many games on high settings, when i run GTA IV, it lags like hell. even on the lowest settings.

Apparently your "gaming GPU" is rather bad , assuming we're even talking about the same card.

Why do you buy an i7 for gaming? That's a waste of money. Get a phenomII x4 or a Core2 duo/quad. Games do not require, nor use all of the i7's possibilities. You are using Nvidia. Switch to ATI :D Nvidia is just recylcing their old cards renaming them and pricing them higher. If you have finally realised that, then you should now note that this card you use now is pretty weak for real gaming. Now you should buy either an ATI 48xx or a 58xx. I don't know if you have 32 or 64 bit, but you should try to get 4,6 or 8 gb of RAM. This ensures a smooth experience without a lot of bottlenecks.
When the first multicore processors came, games were coded specifically to support two cores. Later, with the emergence of quadcores, developers started coding truly for a multiprocessor environment, using n cores. Therefore a quad with hyperthreading will always be better than a quad / dual without one, assuming the architecture is somewhat on the same level.
A CPU that has hyper-threading (a.k.a. the i7) is much better than a CPU on the same level that doesn't. Therefore, if you have a good, well optimized PC, you want to get a CPU that has... hyper-threading. So you are proclaiming that Nvidia has stopped moving forward in technology? Ookay. Unless you are comparing one graphics card to another, why does it matter? (Something like the GTX 480 is apparently baloney using this logic.) (OP: By the way, yes that graphics card is rather weak. I can't see it running GTA 4 on a smooth frame rate even on lowest settings.)
So apparently, the GF100, while effectively a failure in my mind, is not a new uarch, and ram can mitigate bottlenecks? No, and no. And if you honestly think that ATI isnt guilty of tweaking and rebadging, then you have a bit more research to do, though, that I could tell by this post alone.
