Hello, I've learned a bit about GPUs but im still pretty unclear on CPUs and everything else. What do you think of this deal in terms of current PC games? How fast should I be able to run them on 1920x1080? Will I just have to upgrade particularly soon? Sorry, im new to this and trying to learn, thank you for your time Core i7 920, GTX295

both are pretty eh... i'd say go for socket 1156 core i7, since tri ch memory is pointless and as for the gtx295... it's getting outdated due to its lack of dx 11, so maybe have a look at the 5800 ati series or the gtx 400 series from nvidia they might not be as powerful, but at least you'll be somewhat futureproof btw 1500 for a system like that might be good if it was like 6-10 months back before dx11 stuff/ socket 1156 stuff

Ew...the GTX 295 is weak sauce IMHO, though, I dont like any dual GPU configurations. A system with the HD 5850 would be a better deal IMHO, not to mention it would allow for more consistent gameplay as well as future use of DX11 and its offerings.

It's not worth the $1500. You can easily build a better one for under $1500, all new. It's not a bad build, the only outdated part is the graphics card. It's a great GPU and all, but there are newer, better ones.

What would be an appropriate GPU nowadays for a mid-high-range budget? Something not ridiculous but hopefully above the 920 in performance, using the more recent sockets n whatnot (I have little to no idea when it comes to CPUs about sockets).

CPU wise, there truly arent too many consumer CPUs that can to go toe to toe with the 920 and come out on top, though, the 930, is essentially the same thing, the price of either CPU is quite attractive. In any high end build, that would be one of my top CPU choices other than select Xeons, such as the E5620. The most recent/current sockets are LGA 1156 and LGA 1336, of which, LGA 1156 is meant more for mainstream users and LGA 1336 is more for the high performance/server market, though the CPUs on LGA 1156 are nothing to sneeze at.

Now guys, the 1500 dollar price is a Canadian price and in Canada, the PSU, case, mobo and cpu is already 1000 bucks before tax (13% HST), add to that he gets 2 hard drives, 6 sticks of ram, windows, keyboard and mouse and a video card with an excellent resale value (at least $350, just make sure he includes receipts for the card) and the deal doesn't look so bad. The only downside is that it is used. In Canada, I don't think you can get a better computer for the same price. If you're lazy and looking for a new computer, look no further The GTX 295 is still a strong GPU and beats the 5870 in most games and benchmarks but it does draw more power as well as it is still on DX10 but really, there isn't a lot of difference between DX11 and DX10

Thanks for all the help everyone, I must say the TECH section here has impressed me thoroughly I've instead decided to be bold and design my own... i7 930 Corsair HAF 932 Cooler Master EVGA GTX480 6gb Corsair Dominator DDR3 ASUS P6T mobo Corsair tx750W supply WD Black Caviar 1TB HDD Native Instruments Audio 8 USB soundcard (im a Traktor DJ) Some DVD, haven't decided yet Mah Razer Deathadder (I want a red one to go with the case...) Possibly Logitech G15 v2 Buying the parts off of ebay and avoiding the HST, it comes out to about $1600 USD Sound good?

An aftermarket HSF isnt necessary but you at the very least need the stock cooler.

I'd stay away from eBay unless you are ordering from Canadian sellers. A person selling a GTX480 for 450 might give you 112 bucks in customs fees which make the item more than you paid for. Otherwise, the build looks good and I would change nothing on it. The only thing you could change is the GTX480 and get a 5870 to save money instead, but EVGA IMO is the best graphics card company that is still out there so the nvidia cards will offer you the best warranty
