Ok, so i got into the 34th best public high school... and they want all the students to take away their facebooks... so now i need to put an animated picture and also change my name... what do you think about prohibiting facebook? they say its a distraction and loses the competition of being one of the best public high schools. For me, i find it helpful, to socialize and also get the homework from people if you miss it.

Might as well say don't even have an e-mail address at all. They should just block the website from being accessed on school property if they're concerned with it, there is no point to forcing the students to stop the use of social networking altogether even if you're elsewhere and having you to remove everything. Facebook is a completely harmless service to use outside of school, so I don't know what your school's intentions were or whether you exaggerated it/worded it wrongly.

They're concerned (misplaced as it may be) about the effects of social predators on young people, and they think they can protect them by trying to prohibit their out-of-school behavior. This has been on the news a number of times with different school districts trying to do this, with varying support from parents. It's like trying to protect kids by banning dancing- ie: "Footloose".
