It's obviously a good idea, the pros outweigh the cons greatly. Any mods against the idea: You are probably just mad because one of your powers became more useless.
2566 : I think it is a bit much to call it "asinine" and "stupid" to point out hypocrisy. You are overreacting. LimusocoBobo was just making a point. His "moaning" is not hindering the "development" of this website.

AngraMainyu : I am not accusing the entire team, nor you in particular , of this sort of stupidity...
I do not recall reading any of Bobo's posts addressing suggestions; what I've called stupid and asinine, I would attribute more to former moderators.
2566 : It is not as if the entire foundation of BasilMarket will collapse if we do not implement new features soon. We are an established website. We are doing fine. I do think the site can be improved and that mrbasil needs to loosen up a bit when it comes to new features, but it is far too much to accuse others of slowing BasilMarket's necessary development with moaning.
The following are citations of faulty reasoning that have successfully filibustered reasonable debate of suggestions, useful or otherwise:
mapalo : Any additional form of text modification (underlining, colored fonts, etc.) REASON: Abused, would be used to draw attention to individual posts, flashy large fonts are distracting

mapalo : Customizable homepages REASON: More scripting and time than actual usefulness, front page and site changes are frequently being modified based on suggestions from the community, and the administration's discretion

mapalo : Post counters REASON: Elitism. "I have more posts than you so I'm better"
The following are citations of faulty reasoning that have successfully filibustered reasonable debate of suggestions, useful or otherwise:
To be honest, I had no idea what you were saying in your first two sentences. I shouldn't even have responded. So, to clarify: Bobo's post was obviously not stupid or asinine. Your other cited examples, however, are. And I agree. Again, my point is not that "moaning" does not slow the implementation of features (because it obviously does), it is that the implementation of features is not as important as you are making it out to be . I just felt you were making too big a deal, that's all. Perhaps I misinterpreted you and if so, sorry. To clarify again: I agree that some of the excuses made are stupid. BUT it doesn't matter that much. THE END.

This would be the perfect time to use this feature but first can a mod explain how this thread was locked? I don't even think it was the thread starter.
2566 : I don't think you understood my point. My point is that there isn't anything to develop or solve. BasilMarket does not need more features. LimusocoBobo was not arguing anything anyway. He was pointing out that, just a few years ago, mrbasil said this feature would never happen. angramainyu was overreacting a little bit and perhaps that's why you thought they were arguing.
You're right, the website doesn't NEED more features. That doesn't exclude the fact that there are more features that, if implemented, would improve Basilmarket. And I didn't mean arguing as in "fighting," I meant arguing his side. Saying "This feature will be abused" is too vague and doesn't even make sense if you try to support it.
Bobo : Comparing Basilmarket to other forums can't be a good way of evaluating our success... this has been said countless times in the past by the Team as they previously thwarted numerous suggested features. "We are Basilmarket, not other forums. Things don't work here as they would elsewhere." Or should we go ahead and admit that the Team was wrong about what it said about comparing Basil to other sites?
Comparing Basilmarket to other forums may provide helpful ideas on improving Basil. I don't see why it wouldn't. Of course Basilmarket isn't any other forum; that doesn't mean two sites don't run the same. They can run similarly, and from what I've seen in other forums, the ability to lock one's own thread is only a good thing. So to be blunt, yeah I think the team should admit that they were partially wrong in that quote.
Eevee : You can lock/delete your OWN thread. No one elses. We still can.
I think he meant to imply that one of your powers is less significant now that normal users can lock their own threads, when previously they would have to lock their own.
Sentiment : Okay what the hell is going on in this thread, why are the mods mad for a GOOD thing getting implemented?
Some of them don't think it's entirely "Good", and they are upset that such a dramatic change in the way threads are handled was just decided by mrbasil without even telling the mods, that's why. I don't really care about this particular issue, but for those that say it can't be abused, here's an example: http://www.basilmarket.com/forum/1539127/0/how_to_get_your_screen_always_accepted.html# It should be fairly obvious the guy's using the feature to try to make the mods look bad when he says "MODS MADE ME DELETE THIS OR THEY SAID I WOULD BE PERMA-BANNED". (If a mod wanted it deleted, they could just do it themselves...) Anyways, I can see how it'd be awesome for regular users and a little helpful for mods, but there's still some grey areas that B should work out with the mods when dealing with the new feature.

If someone believes that thread, then they're just lacking common sense? :|

Brb, posting a thread about my extremist views on several controversial topics and then locking them so no-one can rage at me without making another thread. Because my posts aren't technically breaking the rules mods can't get rid of them. This has the potential to create more spam than there is now, especially here.
Sentiment : FINALLY, THANK YOU FOR EXPLAINING And wow, butthurt mods much? Anyways yeah I can kind of see how that would be abused now. But why the hell didn't the mods delete that thread already, instead of leaving it there to make them look bad? Also, BAN the guy, nothing's ever stopped you guys from banning people before.
They probably just didn't look in the thread, honestly, and I just saw it a few minutes ago. Plus, it's not like most people are gonna think to report it. When I was a mod, if I saw a thread that was locked, that usually means another mod is in that thread working to suspend people, and if I were to start suspending people in there, that'd result in a few double suspensions. (It's kind of confusing, though, I think B did some things to prevent it, and I'm not sure, but if suspensions are done simultaneously, they can still have a single post result in two suspensions. o_o) Hye I'm sure there's plenty of other ways it could be abused, like the guy above said. o_o I don't expect it to happen often though, so it's not really a big deal.

LimusocoBoboOh shroomsly, you always know how to say things so perfectly. If I could just erase my post(s) and say what shroomsly said I'd be just fine. I "grew up" on Basil hearing how the addition of this feature could lead to abuse, so I was concerned about this swift action. You'd only know if you were around back then. But, I'm willing to move forward now. It would be a little less annoying if I could get notified of these things and why.
LimusocoBobo : Well, angramainyu, hypocrisy is hypocrisy. The Basilmarket Team adamantly refused the addition of this feature for at least 2 years and now it has been suddenly implemented. While it may be nicer and prettier for me to claim that "I'm glad that we can admit when the Team was wrong," nobody has even said that the Team was "wrong" in the first place. The feature was simply added with no discussion or "admittance of being wrong." So, how can you be so sure that we were wrong before? I think it would be really nice to be able to hear why we were wrong and why we are changing the site.
"Abuse" is not an argument; it is reality. Given that we've already implemented auctions, forums, reports and personal messaging -- the potential of abuse for all of which far exceeds the scope of locking unwanted or undesirable threads -- crying "abuse" at every suggestion is simply something for nothing.
LimusocoBobo : Comparing Basilmarket to other forums can't be a good way of evaluating our success... this has been said countless times in the past by the Team as they previously thwarted numerous suggested features. "We are Basilmarket, not other forums. Things don't work here as they would elsewhere." Or should we go ahead and admit that the Team was wrong about what it said about comparing Basil to other sites?
Contrasting ourselves to other forums is not only perfectly appropriate, but the only tangible measure of success. BasilMarket has thrived precisely because we possess what Sleepywood and MapleTip do not. Handing Basilers blunted scissors rather than allowing our developers to do their job gives them only incentive to opt for another forum whose administration is not so diametrically opposed to benefiting from user suggestions.
