| Ok, so I'm in Track and XC, and next year will be my 2nd year doing it and I'll be a Junior, and one of my friends has been doing it now almost 4 years and he'll be a senior.. However, I'm much faster than he is, and everyone says I have more potential to be securely on Varsity, because there are only 7 spots. One of my friends has been doing track and xc all of his years and he really wants to be on Varsity too, but he overestimates himself and thinks he can EASILY do it, which is a feat I'm not completely sure I can achieve, and I'm considerably faster than he is. But he really wants to be on Varsity, but I actually work at it; I'm doing summer track competitions, gonna start running extra mileage, and training harder than the rest of the team, whereas he thinks only doing half of what I will will make him fast enough to take that spot, because he thinks he's "naturally really fast at distance", which doesn't make sense because his track times were really bad for a junior, times I beat and he's older than me by 2 years and has received 2 years of training more than I have.. I really want that spot, not only for personal accomplishment but so that I can gain more respect from my peers; my coach says I can do it and everyone else thinks I can, but I'd feel like a jerk if I did it because it's his last year at the school and I'd be taking his spot, almost all of the spots are secure and only like one is available.. |

 | No take the spot, he needs to learn that if you want something in life you have to work for it not just be given things by others all the time so you're doing him a favor. |

| Do it. You're friend didn't put any effort at all into securing that spot. He's conceited. In my mind, I think you should throw him into a lake and watch him drown or something :/ |

| That's what I think, I mean I dedicate so much more time and money, and to be honest, I'm naturally much better than he is considering I already beat him by 30 seconds on the mile in my first year. I spent the remainder of my birthday buying a pair of $110 Track shoes for my summer competitions, whereas he doesn't even go to practice anymore. Not my problem though, it's just gonna bite him in the ass next season. |

[/quote] 4:40.29 But it's true, I don't like how he expects everything to be handed to him just because he's been doing it longer than he has, I didn't try during XC, and I will now because I want that spot, but I've probably run more and run harder, and bled more (literally, because I ran several days barefoot and bled quite a bit haha stupid mistake) than he has in all 3 years/6 semesters of doing track/xc |

| No, absolutely not. I've never heard of putting your friends before your own dreams, and his attitude isn't even very sportsmanlike, so I'd consider this friendly rivalry to compete for that spot against him. I'd do the same thing in basketball next year during senior try outs. |

| Depends what you value more. Integrity or loyalty. I personally value integrity more. So I'd suggest you'd go out there and give it your all. There are still 6 other spots right? Maybe your friend will get one. |

He doesn't have the work ethic to get it.. he claims that he's gonna confident he'll get back into shape and pass me by then, and he's really arrogant just because he ran a 17:58 ONCE last year, which is still pretty slow.. he always says "oh you didn't get a 17:58" but I just rub it back in his face when I tell him he's never even broken 5. |
