Went about 20 minutes ago and stopped at my local cvs and got a couple of cards. Then I got to thinking... what does the store get for keeping those cards (and many others similiar to it) in the store? They don't make any profit, the cards are tax free and the money goes to whatever company it is. It takes up space (albeit not much but space could be used to sell other stuff). So.. thoughts? Opinions? Maybe I'm just bored and thinking too much into it... lol

I guess they do it for free. It brings in customers, and then they could try to lure them to buying something else that they make profit off of.

Only thing I could think of is more traffic to the store with the hope the person will buy other things. EDIT : Ninja'd :p

Nexon probably pays the stores just to carry the cards, so there wouldn't be much profit lost for the store, and the fee for nexon is probably low too. Either that or they pay the stores a certain percentage of however much NX they sell.

The stores get a commission. I don't have the details as it will likely differ depending on the agreement they have with each company, but for the sake of argument, let's say it's $2 on a $25 card. So, Walgreens sells the card to you for $25, Nexon gets $23, Walgreens keeps $2 for themselves. If we want to be really technical here, Nexon would keep $23, Walgreens would get about $1.50, and the credit card company would keep $.50 if you pay by credit card. No one looses money, it's all just dividing up the $25 sale to the appropriate parties. Also, Walgreens hopes that when you come in you'll buy something more than just the $25 card. Perhaps you'll buy a high-margin item like a soda or something, or decide to fill your prescriptions there, or whatever. I know when I buy a card, I also buy some other stuff (chips and soda to go with dinner, etc...).

It's like a sponsor thing. CVS & RiteAid will carry Nexon's Cash Cards & Nexon, in turn, kind of advertises the store for them. Also, you have to admit you take quick glances around the merchandise to get to the NX cards, yes c:?

well considering that it costs pretty much nothing to Nexon to provide the electronic goods you're buying using NX cash from the cards, your $10 or $25 card purchase would be $10 or $25 profit. Now provide a generous fee to the carrier (CVS, Rite Aid, etc.) of like 5% or 10% or even 25% card value, and Nexon is still pulling in $7.50-$9.50 on each $10 card purchase. Makes sense.

The store definitely received some of the profit. I worked at an Auntie Anne's and knew the owners, and apparently they own the franchise, but the company keeps like 10% of profits. So I'm guessing it's something like that, I have no idea.

They make no profit out of it at all. My friend worked at a gasstation or fuelstation [I don't know how you call it in USA], and that minishop was selling pre-paid telephone cards. After some time they dissapeared out of the store, because it didn't make profit. Also the luring system might be an idea, but not for small stores.
