After watching The Simspons episode with the skeletal angel, it had me thinking... (The Simpsons is incredibly philosophical) Many atheist on this site mention that they see no proof of a god and therefore are atheist correct? Hypothetically speaking, without answering with "Nope, it can't happen at all so I won't be open minded and think of this hypothetical situation," if the Christian judgement day would happen, would you switch sides instantly like Lisa had done? I'd say I'm much more like Marge who isn't completely ignorant of either side but is still religious. The point of faith is to believe in something without absolute proof confirming or denying it's existence. What I see on this site is several Basilers who confuse agnosticism with atheism. I am good friends with a few atheists that are genuinely atheist and I've noticed a big difference between the rebellious Basil atheist and my atheist friends. If it helps, I'm an 18 year old Catholic. Please keep an open mind when considering your answer.
Koleda : People who believe in God, place their faith in God, because they believe that he is real. People who don't believe, don't place their faith in God, because they don't believe he's real. Notice how the word "believe" is in both statements. Religious arguments cannot be completely resolved in a 'logical' manner because of that little word. You can logic your way in or out of belief of anything. I've met people who would be able to logic themselves out of believing in Frosty even if he was right in front of them dancing around. Being Atheist means that you truly believe there is nothing past the physical realm, that you cannot have miracles or demons or angels, and that there is no spiritual side to anything. Everything is from dust and will eventually become dust. Most people that use the title "Atheist" are actually agnostic. The difference between the two is small. The agnostic admits that there is spiritual stuff, and that there is the possibility of God. Unfortunately, a lot of people have been hurt by churches. So, many people choose to label themselves Atheists because it angers others, not because they actually believe that way. (At least this has been my experience with people that call themselves Atheists.) EDIT: Wording of first sentence
This is exactly what I learned from my philosophy teacher. Thank you for wording it because I seem to have problems articulating my thoughts over the internet!
LowWillpower : People like you sicken me. You give people who do not believe in god a bad name. You assume because you don't believe in god, people who do believe in it, believe in it for irrational reasons, or reasons that it's fear or something. People can genuinely believe there is a higher power, not just because they are concerned with afterlife, but because it actually makes sense to them.
I don't give them a bad name. I used to be a christain. I don't assume everything. everything I said in my earlier posts are from personal experience, you don't know me so don't criticise me, I've been their and done it all. It doesn't make sense. Look at the proof. And when I say proof, don't say 'what proof' research it, like I did, then hit yourself with a book in the head repeatedly because you know how dumb you were being.
salaraz : If you actually knew everyday people who attend church and believe strongly in a god you'd see what he means. He isn't assuming, religious people usually do have some sort of failed aspect in their life (irrational reasoning for their faith). To name a few of the ones I know, a girl I know was molested as a child and now has a strong belief that the christian god is real and that he loves her no matter what. It's obvious why she needs to believe that. This 30-something year old woman who used to babysit me also had a heavy heavy reliance on religion, because her husband went to prison and she was then in charge of supporting 2 sons with no work experience. My mom is a devout catholic because she struggles to support us and make ends meet. Every time things went bad she'd say it'd be okay, god doesn't punish good people. Every time things went well she'd say "He chokes people, but doesn't strangle them to death". In spanish of course. I'd smile and nod along, this is what makes things bearable for her. These are 3 examples I easily thought of. Doesn't seem like they believe in something higher out of genuine interest, it's just a personal comfort. Like with all people. It's fine to have religion as some sort of support for yourself. But to claim it isn't an irrational belief is just ignorance. Take a good look at the people who believe in it. I mean a really good look. If you personally believe in it try to analyze why. There's always a reason. Not always a good one. There's always some sort of point where people hit a personal rock bottom and then have an "epiphany" of sorts and start their little encounter with god. Or they're raised into it. Either way, it isn't a true opening of the mind. It's an encasing to feel safe, loved and like you belong. OT: I personally would not flip to any faith if "judgement day" came upon us. Whatever god would supposedly be causing it would have to come up to my face and scream at the top of its lungs "I AM GOD AND I ENJOY PANCAKES". Otherwise it's nonsense. That kind of talk belongs with the conspiracy theorists and the 2012 lunatics in my opinion. The only thing that would end life on earth would be of natural origin anyway, but I'm sure conspiracy nuts and religious people would construe it as something else (such as "judgement day"). I typed a LOT. I'm out for the day
See, generalizations never work, because I'm the rebuttal to your first paragraph. I don't believe in God because I experienced some horrible accident. I'm actually blessed enough to live in a rich community with top-notch schools. I guess from an Earthly view, I could do "fine" without a religion. And I'm not the only one. See, what you described IS one of the major ways some Christians turn to God because it is possibly the best way. God may see it fit to use these experiences with some. Of course, I can't answer the question of how He shows his presense, that's a personal question with everyone. As for your second p

What part of my post did you infer this "rebellious attitude" from? Would you not feel the same hatred towards a sadomasochistic megalomaniacal bully? Again, it's a matter of perspectives; you may think your god is omni-benelovent and just.
Romulan : This is flawed. Their is a difference between the people who you call 'rebellious basilers' and agnostics. Agnostics WANT proof of 'God's' existence, these so called 'rebellious basilers' don't WANT or NEED proof because they plainly believe their is no God or God's. At you phrase 'rebellious basilers', you call them rebellious basilers because they refuse to believe what you do, so you call them 'rebellious'. Can't you just accept that they won't believe in something that THEY BELIEVE to be so farfetched that it's not possible, because let's face it, anybody who believes religion was either brought up to believe it as a gullible child into a family which is dis-illusioned or scared of no afterlife, or has been drugged up to believe it, and trust me people do drug others to believe a religion. Yes I am right on this, you cannot fault this as it has and does happen too many times to not prove it. If I need to edit this to promote what I like to call 'Sane-ism', I shall do so. If I get flamed for stating facts and beliefs, SET ME ON FIRE!
Believe it or not, you're actually a prime example of the rebellious type I was speaking of. I'll have you know that I attend church on a weekly basis without my parents. They haven't forced me to be confirmed, it was my own decision to do so. You also show your ignorance by completely basing your argument with the idea that I can't accept atheists when I have clearly posted that I have atheist friends that I compare to the average Basil atheist such as yourself.

Ironic, you called athiests close minded, when you are too. Judgement day = proof of God athiesm = lack of belief in a God People are athiest because there is no coherent proof of God. If there is a judgement day, then God's existence is proven. If athiests see the God then they know the existence of God, and they do wever. Athiesm is the lack of belief in a God and religon. Its not a hate of God. Get your facts straight before you ironically call people close minded.
guydudeasian : LOL You do realize by saying that religious people are disillusioned, raised up as a gullible child and whatnot, you're being ignorant and "rebellious" yourself. Hypocrite.
Definition of 'Rebellious': 'Rebellion is a refusal of obedience or order'. If by calling me rebellious you mean I'm not being obedient, please take into account that I don't believe in a higher God therefore I am not refusing to obey, but I obey the laws which I live by, which are the laws of the state. If by calling me rebellious rebellious you mean I refuse to follow the 'order', then you are simply wrong again, because I follow the order which is created in the houses of parliament in English by my all high and gracious Queen. You clearly mis-read or mis-quoted my earlier post as you say that I said religious people are disillusioned. What I said, or meant to say, was disillusioned people believe that belief in God or a higher living being is a rational view of reality, which it is clearly not. How am I being ignorant? Like I said earlier I've been their I've seen it all, I'm not ignorant, I'm logical.
