Alright, lets say a friend that you're really close with, or like says hi to you on MSN/AIM/Skype whatever and you reply almost instantly with a hello back. You wait an hour but the person hasn't responded since the previous hi he/she gave you. What are your thoughts/opinions? *Note I'm not asking what you would do, but what your thoughts would be at the given situation and time.

Saying "hi" to someone does not make them a close friend. Further more you did not say anything that warranted a reply.

thoughts is that they're busy, and i'm bored of waiting, so i will forget about it. ... then again, they may just not be feeling chatty, which is odd considering they're on MSN. i have a relatively close friend that i go to school with, and he starts MSN conversations. i usually don't reply, because the conversation goes nowhere, and i can't be bothered trying. isn't it annoying how people start the conversation with 'hi', and make you do all the work? if they bloody wanted to speak to me, they should say something more than just hi.

I have the same issue too so I'm kinda curious about everyone else's opinions My gut tells me that he just spams a bunch of people with "hi" and responds to the ones that he wants to if they're around, so I always feel like I wasn't "chosen" to talk to him. It sort of eh, makes me feel like I'm not important to them :/ They're important to me and all, but I feel very insecure when I get the feeling I don't mean that much to them

tbh if i didnt say "hi, wuts up" as a respond then id close that chat box. if they said hi and i replied with a hi/hey and they dont response id still close it lol! and if they blink again then i guess conversation resumes?

Well if after a minute no one said anything I'd probably add a "whats up" and if nothing, then just x out of the conversation.

Respond with indifference. In rare cases I'd be irked and start thinking up why they would be busy, or the very very small possibility that they might be ignoring me and if so, why?

[/quote] This has happened to me in the past and is currently happening to someone I know. I just want people's opinions and thoughts on the situation so I have a better understanding this subject.

my thoughts would be either "hmm they must be busy, i'll go occupy myself with something until they come back" or "screw it, i replied and they havent said anything after that for an hour. i'm gonna go play a game"

[/quote] What if what you do is the same thing as what your thoughts would be doing at the time/moment? Just curious. Like "screw this, 10th time I've tried to chat with him and all I get is nothing. Used to be cool..." and then it becomes a routine with others? "Not again.." "-rages at that person-" Ontopic - People should either learn to use away messages or log off if they're going to do that. Or at least give a decent excuse for not responding. I mean, you're chatting with them. You greet because you want to chat, if they don't want to say anything/aren't in the mood, then they should say something instead of keeping silent. That and I think homework isn't the best excuse, take 15 or even 30 minutes to chat, it's not like HW will save your life or murder you. It's not going anywhere. Though, I am a hypocrite, there's not many people I talk to and they don't seem to have any issues..that and I don't respond because I'm sleeping. (Which makes it not count since there's a response from eachother and then silence) I mean, it's boring if you have to keep barraging them with questions and whatnot and only get answers. It kind of shows their level of interest in chatting with you. Rather, it's not a conversation, it's a Q&A. You're trying to have fun with them, not interview them -_-. It's annoying. It's kind of like... "Hi how's your day?" "good, u?" "some things happened, but good" -person stops responding after that- IMO, it's.... It's like being put on hold when trying to do something/getting support from a company. Except the company will eventually finish with you.
