You will never use anything beyond grade eight level math throughout the rest of your daily life. Even if you do go into a math-related field, most of the things you learn you will forget anyways due to lack of usage. The human brain naturally processes language better than it does math. Show me somebody whose mathematical capability far exceeds their linguistic abilities and is not an autistic savant and I'll show you a flying pink unicorn.

How would a foreigner even have the chance to ask you where the library is, if he lived a continent away? If it weren't for "advanced" math, we'd have no telephones, transportation, or other methods of communication. From what I see, math ... or advanced math, as you call it, makes the world go round.

[/quote] Of course. You might not see the effects in this generation, but it will be very noticeable in the second and subsequent ones. If math was not mandatory, we would not have doctors, engineers, researchers, etc. as basic mathematics are needed in order to prepare for more advanced math. If you asked 100 students in your class, I could easily guess that 90% of the class wouldn't take the math courses, but would want to go into the medical, engineering, science field. Advanced math courses in high school lay down the fundamentals and prep them for when a student decides to go to college.

High school is for dabbling in many areas, to gain a broader understanding and to get perspective. When you go to college no one cares whether you take advanced math, or advanced anything for that matter. Even in high school, I would think that most schools let you select your own classes... and math as basic as Algebra II hardly counts as being "shoved down your throat."

Honestly if your math skills were at an 8th grade level you would fail in life, I guarantee it. I'm not saying that literature isn't important but math is crucial to function in today's society. Literature is important culturally but math is important universally.

School system needs improvement. By highschool (Grade 10 and up), I believe thats when we have to choose our future occupation. We can then choose which subject to take. Course =/ most people would choose the popular, higher paying jobs and I guess this could be the flaw.

[/quote] If they wanted to go into those fields, they would take those classes. Simple as that. I'm not saying to ban advanced math courses, which you mistake me for. Also, advanced learning doesn't really begin until college, and if only the interested were taking those fundamental high school courses, they would be more prepared

When you are 14-15, chances are, you don't know what you want to do in life, so how can you be prepared? Finally, those math courses are designed to not only provide the necessary foundations for college, but also to give each person knowledge in the subject. You'll be more well-rounded and able to use your brain more

Its more of the problem solving part that we need. not the equations, the equations is more for engineers, programmers, physicist

Amazing!"), and suddenly it becomes useful. If you're into history, that is. As for the actual thread, meh. It's obvious that the TS doesn't need to understand advanced mathematics to use her computer or something. But at the same time, an appreciation for the math that made the computer is not a bad thing. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't torn on this issue. In all honesty though, if your profession won't require it, and you don't want to learn it anyway, then why bother? It'll just fade away from lack of use.

Most people are pushed into it because of GPA and such. Many people take AP calculus just so they never have to do it again. That's not necessarily promoting it, but making people try to make themselves look better. If they never had somewhat of a genuine interest in it, they certainly won't if they hate doing it Anyways I'm going to bed. If this thread is still alive by 8 in the morning, I'll respond to your replies
