If you have to eventually heat magnesium strips in a crucible to produce Magnesium Oxide, what would be the purpose of polishing the strips first? Thank youo

We did this in class the other day, I think it's because the magnesium may have reacted with oxygen already Nd may have formed a thin layer of oxide around the strip, preventing the actual magnesium from reactiv. When you polish it you get rid of this layer so the magnesium will react.
