Why does it take so long to update a server?

| This is a serious question, I don't understand how this would work. I thought that it only took a few minutes to update files. Is there some special process they use? |

| It's because they're all complete dunces.
Satoshi1234 : ...I'm saying that they should have the regular copy in the system, with a backup copy that they are working on and upgrading BEFORE THE PATCH TIME, and then, at the time when they feel like upgrading, they just have a 10-15minute patch in which the servers are shut down, and their v.83 in the system is replaced by the v.84 that they have on a USB. It would be easier for EVERYONE that way. Nexon wouldn't have to struggle to do all their updates from scratch in that limited time, and we wouldn't have to suffer because of their stupidity. And don't bring up that "well, it happens all the time..." argument. THAT'S THE REASON WHY I'M SERIOUSLY ANNOYED AT NEXON. (Annoyed isn't exactly the right word, but being any more descriptive would get me banned for abuse to rule 3.)
That's what I put in the patch notes thread... too lazy to retype XD EDIT: @below: EXACTLY! you just summarized my whole post XD |

| It's because they're incompetentents... They're supposed to test everything before the patch day, in a "update test" server, then just replace files and compile server. I think ppl in PS can do a better job -.- |

| One main reason that a patch takes so long is because of GMS's original content (Masteria, Amoria, Neo City expansion). The new content coming in and our original content can easily cause each other to stop working. Just like in the last patch, the subway to Kerning Square and New Leaf City takes off from the same place, and KMS doesn't have New Leaf City. Whatever code Nexon added in to add the subway to Kerning Square caused the subway to New Leaf City to stop working. That's the type of thing that -HIME-, a Nexon America community manager, has repeatedly says causes many delays. |

Whenever we do a upgrade here at my company, you end up having to do a LOT of regression testing. (The fancy term for making sure that all the new stuff you put in didn't break any of the old stuff). Also, there's usually a lot of automated tests that get run which can take hours. And we don't even have people purposely trying to abuse our software. I can only imagine the testing that has to be done knowing you have a small army of hackers dedicated to finding flaws in the code. Every time a test fails, there goes yet another recompile/redeploy process to each server, which can take awhile. In short, what sounds like a simple thing is actually a very lengthy process. |
