Totodile seems like a reasonable choice, I always went for water types in Ruby and LeafGree

Cyndiquil is probably the choice, if you want an easy game. I would probably go for Chikarita because there aren't any other decent grass type pokemon, as for fire and water the obvious choice would be Arcanine and Gyarados.

my choice would be cyndaquil, but try chikorita. A challenge will get you more addicted to the game, thats just my opinion though.
