Which of these Processors would run better, or would they both run at the same quality? 1. AMD Athlon II X2 dual-core processor 250U 1.6 GHz, 2MB Total Cache 2. Intel's Pentium 4 3.2GHz processor 3.2 GHz 1MB Total Cache

Well...considering that the AMD CPU is a few months old compared to the P4 which is half a decade old, my moneys on the AMD CPU for some odd reason On performance alone, the AMD has a higher IPC as well as has two physical cores over one core and a mediocre implementation of SMT.

So would the AMD be worth it for a gaming pc? Or should I step up to a quad core? I want good quality with good prices, but don't want to spend too much

azn011Neither would do well in a gaming PC. But if your definition of gaming is MapleStory, by all means.

I doubt that for three reasons 1) You just compared a 5 year old CPU to a 5 month ( or seomthing like that ) old CPU 2) Both CPUs are terrible 3) They not only use completely different sockets, theyre from two different manufacturers. But ill ask anyway, what GPU do you have?

may you clarify your definition of an upgrade, do you mean to replace a whole machine or plug a new cpu into your existing computer? and the cheapest quad-core out there is the AMD Athlon II X4 620 and 630, both at $99

And the reason why I posted such an old psu is because its the only one off the top of my head that had a 3.2 GHz speed. The psu I'm using now is a AMD Athlon LE-1640, but since I was going to build up my other tower which is able to use my gfx card, I was wondering what the best psu to get would be, at the same time comparing it to my old one.

[/quote] Its CPU , and the 8800GTS was great.... 2 years ago , now its mediocre, at least, IMHO. Also, CPU cycle speed means pretty much nothing if youre not comparing CPUs using the same uarch, which you are not. If youre planning on building a computer, I suggest you let us help you a bit more than telling you just what you CPU to get.

I bought it in 07 and it amazed me then, don't see how that would change, even if new Gfx cards are better. I've decided to basically trash my current project and go with the Core i7 Extreme since I can get it at a discounted price. Thanks alot for the help, and if I have any other questions I'll just pm you

Wait, what? You went from wanting to get a low-end CPU to a nearly $1000 processor at a discounted price and yet you are keeping the 8800GTS..? WTF? o.O Why not just get an i7 920 (which seem overkill for you already) at a discounted price, overclock it, and get a better GPU with the money you saved? o.o

You want a $1000 CPU now? And please dont PM me. I hate PMs.

Whats wrong with an 8800 gts? Look up the specs yourself, its actually pretty good. And yeah, I'm only paying $450 for the processor, and a free motherboard which is way worth it. I was going to use my money to buy everything else I needed, but now I can just work with what I have. You're taking it way too out of proportion. Also, I'd never risk overclocking a cpu.
