Look up "Rape of Nanking" (I think that's how it's spelled) After you read about it you'll know why. I actually teared up watching a documentary about it.

I think it was a good idea at the time, but then again it introduced the world to nuclear warfare. They saw the devastating power the A-Bomb had, and everyone instantly wanted a better one. Then again, I don't suppose it would have been too long before someone discovered it anyways. Although, there were many other ways to bomb those cities, the A-Bomb was just the most convenient (I think, correct me if I'm wrong). I personally don't agree with war in general, but that's just me. Unless we're fighting the Covenant (Halo anyone? :D)

It's not possible to tell. Potentially the war could have gone on and more people would have died than in the explosions but potentially it could have been shorter or it would have been the same number of casualties but we wouldn't have killed as many civilians

I think it was most likely okay to do it since the Japanese took citizens and treated them like guinea pigs, molesting them, testing on them, and whatnot. Also they would not stop, even with the warning the president (Truman) did on that time about dropping the bomb if they continued and they did so they had no choice. Plus, the bomb just killed 200,000 citizens, comparing to the lives that the country would have lost if they sent their 1million troops to invade and control Japan. I was just curious what you people think, but it seems you can only relate stuff like this with homework.

They could have bombed some uninhabited region, possibly of the coast, first as a deterrent. If that didn't work then bomb cities, next to that it was probably the easiest way to end the war.

Also both bombs together only killed 120,000 people within a day and a few thousand died after from radiation and other causes, what would you rather have the Japanese continue fighting and killing us by the hundereds of thousands? or 120,000 people

no. Japan was already on the verge of surrender. in fact, they were already planning to do so, but wouldn't because the US demanded complete and unconditional surrender and the Japanese see the emperor as somewhat divine, and refused to surrender if it meant they would have to give him up. one bomb was unjustifiable, and two bombs was beyond overkill. besides, they bombs were dropped against non military targets. the side of american history that they don't tell you.

[/quote] Hiroshima was a military target, bases and armories were there. Also its not just because of the military bases. Truman was looking for two cities which would cause the greatest impact and shock to the Japanese people. He wanted a city with a larger diameter than 3 miles, very urban, and wanted it where the after shock would make the Japanese immediatly surrender

the us was also trying to bomb them with more traditional bombs with no surrender. They were losing resources and men. When they sent in the a-bomb they saved time, resources and men.

OT: My personal belief is that after deciding whether to invade Japan or drop the bombs, the bombs were dropped on targets that would cause devastation and make Japan lose the will to fight, seeing their comrades dead. Effective but gruesome method of winning. EDIT: Oops, freeaznboy ninja'd me.

The second bomb was totally unnecessary, but I still do not think the Japanese deserved it. The Japanese citizens shouldn't take the fault of the government's wrongful action. Then again, what the hell do I know about history?
