| Updated Feb 24, 2010 Greetings Basilers! Basil guides are going to get a serious upgrade soon! If you missed the notice, read it at the bottom of this post. I've read all 6 pages of comments and flushed it out to make room for new comments. Thank you for taking the leave your thoughts. News Many of you were concerned that you'd lose control of your guides. That's obviously not going to happen. This new system just makes it easier for people to leave feedback and for them to get credit if you implement their suggestions/edits. Nobody but you and myself can edit your guides. However, if your guide remains unedited and/or you become inactive (ie, 6 months or more) we will hand over the guide to someone else to maintain, but this is not a new policy. We have move changing guide author's for a few years now. The new system also has loads of new formatting options (font sizes, colours, spoiler, box, sidebar, images, table of contents, etc etc) and a decent but easy to learn tag system to code your guides. Work on this new system began about 6 or more months ago and has been brainstormed for even longer. It's great to be getting to release time! You all stand to benefit from better tools to make your guides the best they can be! The point of creating this thread is/was to guage feedback and get some final input on things you'd like to see. Pardon the lack of information in my prior notice. Hopefully things have been cleared up. If not, feel free to post and I'll clarify when I have time. As I get closer to finishing the final coding I'll be releasing info on the tag system and details about how the new updating system works. Keep your eyes peeled! Thanks!
mrbasil : Old notice: I have been working hard for awhile now on a brand new guides section and I want to get some feedback to find out what you want more of and less from guides. Let me start out by saying that the guides will still be linked from the forums, however, they will also become far more powerful. There are a few important reasons why guides are being updated. The forums have a content limit, the new guide section will not. Everyone will be able to make updates (all updates have to be approved before going live of course), this will address the problem of guide authors not having time to maintain their guides. Also, guides will no longer be lost as has occasionally happened in the past. Finally, there will be some very useful formatting options (ie, table of contents, font options, etc) that will make guides not only look better but function better as well. Aside from these changes, what would you like to see in guides? Notice to guide authors
I highly suggest not editing your guides at the moment. All of the guides are currently being ported over so any changes you make will not be present in the new guide. Please wait for the upcoming guide section to make your changes. Thanks for your patience and understanding. Concerns Some of you are concerned that you won't have a sa |

I'm still wondering how much the word "your" in "your guide" actually means. |

| I think giving the ownership of the guide to someone else is a bad idea. Some people worked hard for the guide while some can just come, take ownership of it and ruin it. |

| @kalovale: I'm not sure who you're quoting in bold there. The copyright notice at the bottom of each page means that all content (aside from Nexon's images) on BasilMarket.com is copyright BasilMarket.com. This means that even if you have written a guide and leave we have a right to post said content. Implementing other users' suggestion does not change anything. @teemo: this is nothing new and has been happening for years. Many of the guides that are stickied on the site for years were written by someone else. It's better to have an updated guide than to either delete it because the author hasn't been on the site for a year or keep it stickied with outdated info. Anyway, our copyright policy has not changed. The point of this thread is to discuss the upcoming guide system changes, not copyright. If you have questions about the latter, use the report system. |

| Hmm... Mr. Basil, Would it be possible for guides to have screenshots instead of links to screenshots? I know it's only a few seconds of our time to click it but we can't read and look at the same time if it's in another tab the image. So I suggest that the authors be allowed to post screenshots as you do when you make a thread of the upcoming patches O: |

| It's a deduction basing off your wording, not a direct quote. At least this much should be made crystal clear, not implied:
Basil : The copyright notice at the bottom of each page means that all content (aside from Nexon's images) on BasilMarket.com is copyright BasilMarket.com. This means that even if you have written a guide and leave we have a right to post said content. Implementing other users' suggestion does not change anything. | Will the guides section have a layout like the forums, screens, "classes/skills" section, or be completely original? How will the guides be indexed? By class, complexity, alphabet, recent updates, or what? Also, I suggest you add links to relevant guides in the classes section, for easier navigation (i.e. a list of guides within the article for each class or subclass, or something similar). |

| @kalovale: glad that cleared it up for you. @teemo: you will have the ability to show images directly in your guide, but only through imageshack (photobucket has a bandwidth limit and users can change the images which is not ideal). @visionary: it will be an entirely new section, tho they will be linked from the forums as they are now. The new layout has significant enhancements over the forums. I haven't worked out guide indexing, aside from the forums I may spruce up the Guides page a little, but I think it's fairly adequate. |

| If possible, I suggest a table format for text modification. E.g.: Skill tables: Level - damage - MP consumption - Range - etc .. 1 - 250% - 25 - 200% 2 - 252% - 25 - 200% |

| @kalovale: thanks for the suggestion, but we already allow users to link to our skill tables (thus keeping the information current, no need for everyone to update their guides) using the skill tag. I'm open to the suggestion, but aside from skills, I can't see why we would need a table? |

| A lot of things, really. Skill isn't the only thing that comes in the form of a list, even when it comes to training areas: monster name - level - avoid - EXP - HP - HP:EXP ratio - damage dealing - Magic attack (Y/N) - Knockback. Although Basil's guides tend not to be data-parsing heavy, tables would allow guide writers to save vertical space and help readers keep track of the whole idea rather than having to scroll up and down to compare one thing with another (e.g. Gallopera's HP:EXP ratio with that of Hime's). After all, it's up to the writers to improvise with what's given to develop new layouts for their guides. For example, a lot of information in this guide could be neatly organized into tables, such as: • The upgrading percentage chance • The lvl/meso requirements to carry out the above action • The Gem's stat-addition list (for clarity's sake) • The Maker recipes For guides that are more technical, such as this one , I could clearly see the use. |

| @kalovale: valid points, and I suppose damage range threads might look nicer too in a table? I'll have to put my thinking cap on for this one. Thanks for the suggestion/extra convincing. |
