First off, I could care less about who wins the most medals. It's a friendly competition and whoever wins, wins. Browsing through Basil, I've been seeing this posted a lot. Americans seem a bit arrogant, but Canadians just bash them down hard, using this pathetic excuse: "Not to mention, the USA only has so many medals because they had over 330 million people to choose the best athletes from. Canada has like 33 million. Think about it." So by that logic, since the U.S has a bigger population than Canada , they have more athletes to choose from. But wait, India and China are participating, how come they don't have more Gold medals than Canada does? I mean, they have a bigger population than the U.S, so that means they have more athletes to choose from! Wrong. Conclusion: U.S doesn't have more medals just because they're more populated, it just means they have better athletes. Otherwise, China and India would be in the top 5 with the most medals. Sheesh, get over it, it's just the damn Olympics, no need to hate on each other.

I've tried to explain that a few times. Nobody seems to listen. Population isn't nearly the factor they think it is. Natural climate, geography, and culture all play much bigger roles. Though usually people are just desperate to rationalize why the US is always winning.

Wow way to quote me I feel special. Also, you DO realize that this is the WINTER SPORTS, right? I understand that India and China have the facilities/places to do winter sports, but no one does them. The United States and Canada get snow almost everywhere, China and India get it in a select few places. So obviously they're not gonna be able to send as many WINTER SPORTS athletes. And before you say "Derp but European countries send Winter athletes!": Most of those countries are big on winter sports, because they have a variety of places that are ideal for winter sports.

The U.S is more populated thus more athletes, thus more chances of better athletes* There are many factors to this equation, each case should be tested separately. Although it is true that if there are more people there are more chances that at least one of them is a talented athlete.

Okay then, that means France, Switz, Ukraine, and Poland should have more medals than Canada since they snow often in their countries and they have a bigger population, right? Population of Norway: 4 million approx Total Medals: 10 Population of Canada: 33 million approx Total Medals: 7 Herp derp why does norway have more medals than Canada, but they have a smaller population? Seems like you agree it's based on skill.
