Entering rant... So, In California you have to take the CAHSEE (California High School Exit exam), and pass, to get a high school diploma. So since so many people, surprisingly fail this test, my school district thinks its a great idea to stop normal curriculum for two days and "practice". So when my English teacher gave me the test I saw the essay we had to do: Basically, you have to write a persuasive essay for your newspaper where you convince readers of the importance of taking action to decrease energy usage. The rubric says to "State your position and support it with specific details, reasons, anecdotes, and examples." OK there's at least 2 things wrong with that: In the prompt it does not give you a choice to "state your position". Automatically, the prompt tells you that you are for reducing energy usage. How is it a persuasive essay when we are forced to take a side? Also, we are supposed to magically KNOW EVERYTHING about reducing energy usage and we are supposed to have already MEMORIZED "specific details, reasons, anecdotes, and examples." I MEAN WTF? No wonder the State is broke. It is full of idiots like the people who made up this essay. UGH END RANT!

Stating your position should be fairly easy then and I am pretty sure you should just get the basic jist of the facts. NOT the down to the wire facts.

Our essay for the CAHSEE was to describe something reallly noticeable; I did a smelly guy! :D But yea the CAHSEE was pretty dang easy, finished math in about ~50mins(was supposed to take 3 hours). But yea, energy usage, GL with that :o

Your essay was straightforward. Mine was "Some things in the world are obvious, and everybody notices them. Describe something that is obvious and everybody notices, and make the reader feel as though they are experiencing it at the moment."

My guess is that you have to choose a particular way of decreasing energy usage (let's say...turning off household appliances and lights when not in use for example) and then list details on why that would be most efficient. You don't have to be the authority on energy usage, but you simply have to provide convincing justification as to why you chose that in particular. Also, you can sum up your essay by speaking about why the other methods fail in comparison to your method. I love grading student's persuasive essays. Just be clear, creative, and check your grammar because it counts and you'll do fine. @TheJokerKid - That's an awesome essay topic! I'll have to steal that one for my classes.

But then I realized that the prompt states: "Write a persuasive essay for your school paper in which you convince readers of the importance of taking action to decrease energy usage." So it isn't about ways to conserve energy, it is about the environmental factors and problems that could occur if we don't, etc. @above with the obvious thing. yeah, that sounds like a crap essay as well. |
