I lie when I feel lying will benefit me more then telling the truth.

Like everyone else, I lie every single day. We all lie to ourselves every day. If we were to think of how vulnerable we really are (say, to bombs, environmental catastrophes, etc.) we'd go insane. But we choose to ignore the data and prefer to think that we are nice and safe. This is, by definition, a lie, because we are intentionally deceiving ourselves, yet everyone does it and doesn't think twice about it. In fact, we do this and other lies and still call ourselves relatively honest people!

For example, suppose your friend is about to die (and is in a hospital), but has recently had a conflict with his mother. Your friend asks you if his mother is present. Now, you know that his mother is still angry and refused to answer your calls when you tried to tell her that her son was in serious trouble. You can either tell him the truth and break his heart, or lie to him and give him peace. At this point, does it really matter that you weren't truthful?

[/quote] I don't think about if a bomb is going to blow me up right now, but that doesn't mean I'm going to deny any possibility or chance of that happening.. You don't make a very strong case. Were you a liar a few seconds ago because you weren't thinking about the possibility of me rubbing fecal matter on your front door right now?

[/quote] I really doubt the mom would react that way... Anyway, it doesn't really matter either way if he's going to die. Also how could you lie about somebody being in a room with you? If he can't physically see her then it would be obvious you're lying.
