mrbasil put in this thing where if you click links to pictures or videos, it opens in a weird popup window. call me old-fashioned but I really don't like it. can I turn this off and if so, where

right click, open new tab submit a report if it's still a problem

Disable JavaScript (at least for this domain). It's a LightBox-esque technique, which relies heavily on JavaScript to work. Disable JavaScript, and clicking links goes back to the old behavior you're after.
