I've been reading around and people say rapid fire sucks. Why? i like the appeal of rapid fire a lot more than cannon, but I haven't hit 4th job, so I really don't know. Is rapid fire good for bossing? Why is cannon a lot better?

Rapid fire sucks, because the damage it puts out is so low compaired to cannon. Rapid fire is only good for when your ship breaks. I've seen friends doing 10kx4 with cannon, at 129, and around 2-3k with rapidfire. The thing is, cannon is so fast rapidfire couldn't even hope to catch up. I'm not saying rapid is slower then cannon, cause its not, but cannon just puts out better numbers, faster.

-incoming wall of text- Because Rapid Fire does really bad damage compared to Cannon. Burst Fire: 913%/second (1096% with max Bullseye) 1 RF: 850%/second Max RF: 1417%/second Max Cannon: 2413%/second (2895% with max Bullseye) Rapid Fire is stronger than Burst Fire, but the thing is, RF doesn't really replace Burst Fire for training because it can't be used in midair. For bossing, you'll quickly realize how much stronger ship skills are than off-ship skills, and how durable the ship can get. It's not really worth it to put 30 points to be able to hit 1417%/second even when your ship breaks when you can hit 2895%/second and beef up your ship so that it doesn't break. Bullseye also makes Burst Fire stronger. You don't really need it to KB bosses, either. The only boss that you can't KB with Cannon that you can with RF is Black Crow. A lot of people went RF early when pirates first came out because their reasoning was "well, I'm going to do really bad damage when I'm not on my ship, so I'll need a strong back up skill." In reality, even if you've got max RF, you're going to be doing really bad damage compared to what you can do on the ship. Battleship also lasts a lot longer than people expected. A lot of people estimated that you might be able to use your ship for 50% of a boss run, less for bosses that do a lot of damage like HT. It's actually not uncommon to be on your ship for over 90% of a boss run. You really don't need a better "back up skill" than Burst Fire. Rapid Fire isn't bad, it's just that you have so many other skills that are way more important than it. Torpedo, Air Strike, Bullseye, and Battleship are all more important than it. Even MW isn't a bad thing to have before you start maxing RF.

Yeah, thanks for the info. The ship thing is just what confuses me. I tihnk it's just that I haven't experienced it that I don't realize how easy it is to dismount and how the 90 second cooldown isn't actually that bad. Well time will only tell. I have one more question. Is Airstrike a different skill or is it like burstfire for doublestrike?

I'm thinking of going a different 3rd job build. I'm halfway through it atm. 120 - 20 Burst Fire, 30 Ice Splitter, 26 Flamethrower, 30 Octopus, 15 Gaviota, 30 Homing Beacon Also, what's with 26 icesplitter? Some guides say once you hit 26 icesplitter you can begin to kill 2 newts. What's with 26? I could understand 25, but idk maybe i'm missing something.

That's because by the time time you reach 120, you'll have an extra point. Most people just dump it into ice. Also, I wouldn't suggest maxing ice if you plan on getting flame and ice. 30 ice won't help you any more than 25/26 ice, considering ice doesn't do much damage to begin with. Max fire instead. Just a suggestion.

I read that ice is always used because of the freeze, but fire is only used at certain times.

Eden101 said: "I read that ice is always used because of the freeze, but fire is only used at certain times." Exactly. The freeze, not the damage. Max ice will hardly do more damage than 25/26 ice. While those points in fire are much more important. The difference between 26 and 30 ice is only 8% damage, while the difference between 26 and 30 fire is 12%.
Eden101 07/25/09 + PM | QUOTE | PERMALINK | REPORT
but even though it's 4% more damage, you will use ice A LOT more often than fire. You can use ice practically everywhere besides on the ice restistant monsters. Fire is only needed if you're going to be mobbing gobys or something, since torpedo is already better than fire. so the 4% difference won't change it that drastically.

I use fire as a finisher mostly, so hitting good damage with it is more important than Ice.

Extra damage with ice is irrelevant, because that isn't what ice is use for. It is used for the freeze. Once you get torpedo, you won't be using the fire/ice combo as much as you would have before 4th job. (if any, at all) A little extra damage on ice will not be killing anything faster. I'm level 144 without ice capsules and I still only hit like 2k average with ice. Ice is not a damage skill. You won't find too many uses for the fire/ice combo anyway. I'm not a big fan of it myself, but that's a different story.

Some guides say once you hit 26 icesplitter you can begin to kill 2 newts. What's with 26? I could understand 25, but idk maybe i'm missing something." Read this: 2. Why not max Ice and leave fire at 26? Another ill-conceived arguement. Maxing Fire allows you to get an extra 4% per ice/fire combo in 3rd job. That could be 50-60 damage, which, while seems miniscule, across mobs of 5-6 monsters, that increases to 250-360 damage, and when you 5-6 hit KO monsters, that gap increases to 1250-2160 damage lost. It can be the difference between a 5 hit KO, or a 6 hit KO. Taken from here: http://taintedsouls.darkbb.com/pirate-f14/gunslinger-in-depth-3rd-and-4th-job-builds-t199.htm That's why you max fire and leave ice at 26. And its 26 b/c you have 1 extra point, and it would help more then an extra 10 atk on a already-useless gaviota. And ice's primary function is to freeze, whereas with fire, you are trying to deal good damage. Similar to what efer/nate have been saying EDIT: and look at this: Lv 151 Corsair training at Nest Golems with Rapid Fire lv 154 Corsair training at Skelegons with Cannon The one using rapid fire hits 2k-4k with each rapid fire shot, and the one using cannon/torp easily pumps out 10k hitting shots with cannon and torp does 25-35k to each monster it hits.
