What graphics card do you have? And that's normal if you have a fairly old graphics card along with a resolution like that of your monitor.

Hmm. I'm not too sure. It's a norm for the graphics to appear ugly when it's on a monitor though. Sometimes the ratio the video/movie was recorded in is 4:3 and your monitor's resolution is 16:9 or 16:10. So watching it full screen would distort the ratio. And so, I am unsure.

What exactly do you mean by "ugly"..? Are you saying the graphics are distorted, blurred or offcolor..? Or just that it doesn't look like the 52" HDTV in the other room..?

It's normal. It's because your computer is upscaling the DVD from whatever quality it was originally encoded at, and changing it to 1440:900. So, no, it's not defective. I'm not so sure what you can do about it, try using a better player.
