I don't see why people always say "is the link safe" when they reply to a topic. Hell, just take a chance! If you don't want to, all you have to do is hover over the link and it will tell you where it goes...

Its rare that a link will "hack" you. That's what anti-virus programs are for.

Possibly to avoid viewing disturbing content. Also, not everyone is computer-savvy. A lot of people don't know that you can't really get a virus without downloading something. Anyway, it's good to be paranoid sometimes. Keeps you safe.

Just take a chance with a machine that I spent over $1000 on and that I spend at least 5 hours a day on and that I have stored many valuable files on? I think I'll pass. I don't care how damn good my antivirus software... the best antivirus software in the world is pointless if the user is stupid enough to visit sites that he/she doesn't even know what the content is. ...not to mention the "inappropriate content" factor.

You can get owned instantly, on any browser, without doing anything. There are PDF exploits. Java exploits. Flash exploits. Adobe anything. No matter how secure your browser is, it's only as good as its weakest link (ANY toolbars, extensions, addons) Even console text-only browsers (lynx) have exploits. There are Java exploits that are cross-platform and have payload for different OSes (win/mac/nix). You can get owned by ANY site online. Even major sites. AMD/nVidia got defaced a while back, and was serving malicious WMF files. If an IE user (any version) visited it, they were automatically infected from what was supposed to be a 'trusted site'. If a Firefox/Opera user visited it and clicked download, they were automatically infected as soon as the download finished, without any further interaction.

I, on the other hand, am totally fearless of links. I'll hover my mouse over it to see if it's anything specifically dangerous that I already know about, and if it isn't I'll go right ahead and click that button. I've got a stomach of steel and I trust Avast! antivirus with my life. I'm also not afraid to reformat my computer given the worst, aya. ^^;
