Does anyone on basil have any tips or videos on how I can sound better when I sing?
CaptVerlas : I know most of you will probably stop replying or call me an idiot after this, I know I need to come up with my own sound but this is kinda what direction I'm looking into. Video
Please don't aim for that style, in my opinion, the world has more than enough tenor-range screamers. In my opinion, a singer that's great in one range tends to pale in comparison to one that's fairly good in multiple ranges (Freddie Mercury, Brad Delp and Geddy Lee are among a few of my exceptions). I'd recommend going for a wide-range style, Baritone-tenor is good at minimum but shoot for a baritone-alto, then try for baritone-soprano. If you want to do screams and such, I'd still recommend multiple-ranges as it provides a better presentation and looks better talent-wise. But I will say, in my opinion screaming tends to be a cheap, overused and mediocre gimmick which has led to a couple negative stereotypes about both Heavy Metal and Rock but I won't go into this unless asked).

I find playing an instrument and singing at the same time helps with tone. I'm not sure on how to build the best voice though. Edit: Especially learning songs you can cover.. as you can distinguish how your tone should be. I guess it's a step.

I think you should start singing to songs that you are familiar with at first, so you can experiment with both style and pitch. Then from there, I think you can pretty much nail most songs. Record yourself as well, and you can assess how you want to change when your singing. GL with your singing lessons
sarangbi : You need to control your breathing first. I actually have papers and stuff from when i used to have voice lessons. I'll scan them and send them to you when I'm not feeling lazy. And for vibrato, it's just muscle memory. Most people can do it in a month or less EDIT:@above. LOL i see you've taken voice lessons for a while too.
Thanks! ,Just pm me when you get the chance. :D
demunpuncher : Don't sing from your lungs, sing from your stomach. Don't get formal training unless you want to get stuck in one style and range. Do vocals on Guitar Hero or Rock Band starting on Easy and working up. If you want to go for long sustains (such as at the end of 'More Than a Feeling') learn circular breathing.
Wth, the second thing you said isn't true. My style is very .... musical/broadway. ( semi-classical) O_o but I can actually do a bunch of riffs and runs (not a natural, but I learned to do it through practice)

Work from there, build tonal recognition and clarity
tiganior1 : How the hell do you circular breathe with singing?
Singing isn't any different from playing an instrument in terms of breath control.
tiganior1 : No, I know. But how can you sustain an open mouth note?
I guess the same way as an instrument, but the only singer I know of that has done a long sustain was Brad Delp and he's been dead for a while now.

Just keep practicing and try to reach the certain notes but don't hurt yourself. As otehr people said, sing from your stomach and enunciate and if possible take classes like join the school choir or something. Good luck.

Video
If your going to be a screamer, lookup videos on youtube. They helped me alot :/ I inhale scream though XD and its natural for me so c: But if your going to be a clean vocalist in a screamo/hardcore/metalcore band or something or you just want to do covers, then breath from your stomach as alot of people have already said XD For me though, singing and screaming is really easy so I really don't know how to help you except to look for guides on YouTube, ask your friends, or try and cover a song trying as much to sound like them. c: Hope I helped c:

Try to match you pitch with a piano, and breathe with your stomach not your upper torso :D
