The egg was a result of evolution, when reptiles began laying hard shelled eggs as a result of genetic mutation. The reptiles possessing this ability eventually outlived the ones without it. Eventually, reptiles evolved into birds, and birds began to branch off into different chains, and eventually, into the chicken, which still possessed the egg laying trait.
