LegilimencyEver since I have started using the Internet, which was when I was like 10 years old. I was playing Neopets at that time. And I was amazed, shocked by the English that the people spoke. I was like, " WHAT? Don't they learn English?" Seriously, I want to appeal to the people who don't speak proper English ( maybe some of them are trying but I don't see anybody speaking proper English except for some good ones ) , why do you speak broken English? Don't you want to make people understand what you are saying? Do you seriously think that speaking broken English can make people understand you? Why don't you make a change in your life and start speaking proper English.

People do it to save time, but I don't understand the point of doing it on forums, you aren't being rushed for anything.

I'm too lazy to write a proper post so I'll just copy what I said in the other topic on the same exact subject: I hardly use chatspeak, The only thing I really use is the occasional LOL, and half the time I just end up writing HaHa instead. I hate chatspeak, I'd ban it from the game. I hate it so much I made it an actual rule in my Guild that people must your proper english or face the repercussions. To me not using it is simple, the only thing you have to give an impression of yourself is how you write/type(call it whatever you want). So with this in mind, typing using chatspeak makes you look like a moron, thus the impression you give off is you are a moron. I may be gowing overboard, but if someone talk to me I tell them to write properly if they want me to answer. Sometimes it works, other times I get insulted, in an even more butchered form of english than before. While some people argue I'm unfair to people whose first language isn't english, I can say that I'm smart enough to tell when someone doesn't know a language and someone is just being plain lazy. The way I see it, if they can't make an effort to communicate with me, I won't make an effort to be nice to them. I've yet to see the positive side of chatspeak. Until that day comes, I will continue with the mentality anyone who uses chatspeak is stupid and ignorant.

Mmm... a post without a single spelling mistake or misused verb... that's honey to my eyes. When my guild member, also a good friend speaks to me using "U" I keep asking him "Who's U?". I think some day he'll learn.

maybe you aren't understanding their english because you're playing on MapleSEA, where English is most peoples' second language.
Chybi 03/29/06 + PM | QUOTE | PERMALINK | REPORT
Marblewondre: saying U isn't because english is your second language, It's because you refuse to write properly. I understand someone who makes mistakes because english isn't their first language, Hell I make plenty of mistake and English isn't even my first language. I will not however stand for someone butchering a language for his pleasure.

AtruyaEnglish is my second language, but I can read and spell it without too much mistakes. It irritates me when I get a trade request with: 2k plz, u pro. Its mainly because many people in the community are 10 years or younger. Others are just too lazy to type properly.

I actually doubt that the primary reason for using internet slang is to save time. Some word replacements don't even save you a keystroke - example: 'boi' instead of 'boy'. Also, using things like numbers and pipe colons also frequently takes more time to type than if it had just been spelled properly in the first place. In the event that it is actually done as a time-saving measure, then I find it amusing that I can type in full sentences with correct grammar and punctuation and I'm still almost always faster than anyone else I talk to in the game. I guess that's the joy of typing 90-100 WPM. I suspect the real reason is because people think it's 'cool', just like how being a 'pimp' is somehow cool, even though a pimp is essentially someone who directly and knowingly profits from the misery, degradation and desperation of those society has abandoned. Personally, I think internet slang just makes you look illiterate and/or intoxicated, but for so long as no one is policing it, it's a moot point to argue about it.

Hahah, English is my third language, yet I can speak/read/write/type it like a normal person playing this game should be able to. The most pathetic thing is when people whos' language is primarily English "type lyk dis." It's very frustrating to see someone using the letter "u" instead of typing out "you." It's like saying a fragment of a sentence. Unless someone has taken my interest somehow, I completely ignore people who don't type properly. There is absolutely nothing hard about typing out words. Think of it as homework of some sort. You have to use punctuation, and grammar. After a while, you'll get used to it and start to always type like this.
xSykoMagex 03/29/06 + PM | QUOTE | PERMALINK | REPORT
Well most of the time people do it because they're lazy and they don't want to add the extra 2-3 letters. I do it a lot on AIM just because i choose to.
lavirna 03/29/06 + PM | QUOTE | PERMALINK | REPORT
seriously.. it's extremely annoying. even at an early age that always irked me, the most i went down to when typing like that was u or ur.. occassionally shortening spellings of some other words. speaking english is a privilege, people need to learn how to properly use it. -_-
phoking1 03/29/06 + PM | QUOTE | PERMALINK | REPORT
lol u guys are such nerds...why type out a whole word when u can make it shorter?
