This is the reason why anime english dubs sound so bad

| If you have ever watched anime in english dub, then you know how horrible the voice acting is. There is this awkwardness to it. This unnatural feeling that makes them sound so fake, so unnatural. And it is so, because the english voice actors try too hard to copy the voices to sound like the Japanese voice acting rather than adapting it to English culture Lets compare a disney film (shrek) to an anime dub say.. dragon ball z. They are both cartoons, and both in english but what is the difference? Shrek has professional voice cast Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow. But that doesn't necessarily make them better. The true difference lies in the dialogs culture. Donkey sounds like a black guy. Its natural for us to hear. But goku... sounds like some high school senior role playing superman. Who the hell ever in real life (besides super geeks and nerds) talks in plain heroic justice-like voice like that? Even super man in justice league did 10X better. If i were to give an example of good anime english dub (which is not actually a dub because it was actually MADE BY AMERICANS) so its naturally in english, would be avatar (the last air bender) (no not the crappy fail movie). So people can't just say oh english will never sound good because anime and cartoons just sound better in japanese... No.. not the case. Many american cartoons with the weirdest stories and characters sound great in its american english dialouge. In Avatar, everyone sounded natural. It was something you can execpet in every day life. The bad guys didnt have to change their voice into some stupid try-to-be eviler voice, it was just natural. And aang sounded just like a kid. Not all anime dubs are bad, but most are. Another reason why most anime dubs are bad is because the person in charge of the dubs just get voice actors and hand them the original japanese script. This further forces them to "adapt to japanese culture" which is just unnatural for western culture. To fix this, they need a completely new script and maybe (big maybe) (a new soundtrack). They need to make the environment of the anime sound american but still mix well with the anime's environment and story. |

| I totally agree with you! Nothing more to say. I hate the english dub version. It makes it so unnatural(bit strange because an anime is not real life lol) :P |

| I always thought it was because we're just too used to Japanese voices. The first time I watched Naruto was the dubbed version and when I didn't really watched anime (at least in Japanese), and I didn't really mind the dubbed voices. Same goes for Pokemon and DBZ. |

| well it's the whole language barrier in general, really usually translations for dubs aren't the greatest, and it's not like they can really hire big named actors who even know how to act to do voices for animu |

| I never really watch anime, the onlything I used to watch was SAILOR MOON! But I preferd the english dubs because the original voices are soooooooo squeaky and overdone childish and so high pitched... it hurts my ears. |

|
asand200 : Actually the only anime I hate watching in Japanese is DBz I can't stand gokus high pitched voice
U know i also wonder why they would use the same voice actor (some 60 year old women) to do goku, gohan AND goten. IT was just horrible. Short on budget? Owed her a favor? God knows but it was very disappointing. Not only did they all sound alike they sounded like woman and whats even worse is if u looked at some utube vids they have japanes goku (60 year old grandma) doing the kamehameha for fans.... *barf* She should have played her role like in one piece where she played doctrine who taught chopper everything... She was an old lady... |
